UN Security Council to consider draft resolution in support of Iran nuclear deal

2015/07/19

UNITED NATIONS, July 20. /TASS/. The UN Security Council will vote on Monday on a draft resolution in support of the agreement on Iran’s nuclear program recently reached between six major powers (five permanent UN Security Council members and Germany) and Tehran in Vienna.

The document for a term of 10 years provides for easing the sanctions regime against Tehran and introduces an unprecedented mechanism for the resumption of the previous restrictions in case the Islamic Republic violates the deal’s terms.

The meeting, during which the resolution will be discussed, is scheduled for 09:00am, New York time (16:00pm, Moscow time), which is not typical for the Security Council sessions, which usually begin one hour later. This decision was taken in order to give the speakers more time. In addition, the Security Council will also hold an informal meeting on Monday morning, dedicated to the anniversary of the 51-day Israeli military operation in the Gaza Strip in the summer of 2014.
