40 most crazy Russian balconies

2015/11/29

Since Soviet state demise most of the Russians found themselves living in typical old Soviet buildings. Most of the buildings had balconies and this is where the urge for individuality got it expressing point. People started modding their balconies heavily for a number of reasons. First, most of the balconies were just open air balconies and were not isolated from outside, so they couldn't be used in winters, during rains etc. So first stage of modding a balcony was to turn it into sort of a room to be able to use it all year round. Since everyone was making this job separately from other people living in same apartment building the design of those emerged into really diverse variety. And since every balcony was a individually designed people started to decorate them also heavily often. So lets see what happened with this selection of what might be forty most crazy modded Russian balconies!

Soviet Scientists Perfectly Knew How Humans Could Live Out of the Earth

2015/11/24

In a sci-fi movie "Martian" an astranaut left on the Mars all alone tries to survive in any possible ways. It is especially curious how he produces water and grows potatoes - but actually something like this had already been done by Soviet scientists fifty years ago. Working on prototypes of future bases on the Moon and other planets, they managed to create practically closed systems that independantly produced air, water and even food for participants of the experiment.

In the 60-70s at the order of a world-known scientist Sergey Korolev they made a prototype of a space station where people could live for months without obtaining water, air and food from outside. That result has never been repeated by anyone since then.

How did it all happen? They built a hermetic bunker in Krasnoyarsk to lodge participants of the experiment. They could take only a bit of water, some oxygen and food. Everything had to be provided by the system itself. In fact it is just like settling on the Moon or Mars. The projects were called BIOS-1 and BIOS-2.

Thanks to Dmitry who went there and made those awesome photos we can see how it looks like inside.. and its huge! Over than sixty of large diameter space transmitting dishes pointed onto satellites and many more cool stuff is inside. More than that this object was top secret during Soviet times and still is very restricted access area, but Dmitry got chance to get inside and we are lucky we can see what is inside!

Since the Russian plane tragically crashed above Sinai peninsula in Egypt all the flights to Egypt from Russia were halted and all the Russian tourists staying in Egypt (and Egypt was the most popular Russian travel destination for years) were urgently evacuated. However this evacuation was very quickly done and because the authorities had fears that the plane was  detonated with a bomb in someone's luggage they ordered to leave all the luggage behind! So tens of thousands of people were transported without their bags and suitcases to reduce the risk of new explosions in mid air. But now all those luggages arriving to Moscow and the airports are told to be flooded with the bags. Let's see a few pics.
