Winter Russia. Karelia

2016/07/28

The advantage of tourists over local residents is that one sees everything in a new way, watching open-mouthed, another one indifferently passes by, they had seen it a hundred times.

Here is a village in Karelia, the Russian Finnish region, typical for the whole phenomena of the country, but still different.

*Attention! Dangerous road section!*

Fairy tale, a true fairy tale! I dislike winter but that's because I live in a big city. Karelia is beautiful in snow. I did not cease to admire the beautiful roads.

A lot of Finnish names, and it is clear why. Part of the modern territory of Karelia was Finland.

Therapeutic Mud of the Caucasian Dead Sea

2016/07/27

This is a unique source of health — Lake Tambukan.

During the WWII, wounded soldiers liberated Pyatigorsk from the Nazis, applied  on a bandage a layer of mud from this lake. Today, manufacturers of cosmetics are looking at the lake at their point of view: in Tambukan mud, they say, one can find youth and forget about the shortcomings of the skin.

Healing — if not invaluable — mud they compare to the famous Dead Sea mud. When a couple of years ago, the lake overflowed its banks and washed away the track "Caucasus" - the main road on the Russian south, no alarm sounded about a strip of asphalt, even federal one. Environmentalists were worried about the unique properties of the pond and mud at the bottom. As a result, the unusual lake saved itself: the best defense against poison of asphalt became supersalt water.

What science says about Tambukan.

"Tambukan is a large basin that receives moisture from rain and snowmelt. The Sun evaporates excess water. The Lake is endorheic, and the skeletons of all micro-organisms that have ever lived in it, remain at the bottom," said Eugene Potapov, a candidate of geological and mineralogical Sciences. "Deposits of mud are formed in the same way as oil fields: they need organics — deposits of dead plants and animals. Layer of sulfide silt mud accumulates 700 years, it is estimated the age of the Lake.

The water in the Lake is a saturated salt solution with a salinity of 30 grams per liter. When Tambukan dried, salt content in the waters reached 360 grams per liter, it's even greater than in the famous Dead Sea.

What history says about Tambukan.

Tambukan had dried up many times for 700 years of its life. Then again filled with water — and again dried up. But it has always been salty, and it was into the hands of the inhabitants of the neighbouring villages. Salt is one of the main minerals at all times.

Guinness World Records record-holder, Kirill Shimko, has pulled the biggest helicopter in the world that weighs 35 tons

2016/07/26

Famous Belarusian strongman Kirill Shimko has pulled a helicopter from the movie Die Hard for about 20 meters at Lipki airport, which is the largest helicopter in the world, whose weight is 35 tons. The action is timed to the birthday of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry and at the same time draws attention to the avia festival #pronebo which will be held in Minsk on Borovaya on 30 and 31 July. This is not Kirill’s first record. Over the years, he pulled BelAZ trucks, trains and cranes. And he is just a nice person, whom I know for a long time.

A Tour to the Aeroclimatic Camera

2016/07/26

Now I would like to write about one of the greatest facilities of the ZIL plant. It is an aeroclimatic camera.

An aeroclimatic complex is a unique facility that simulates various weather conditions for vehicle testing. Environmental testing and research were conducted in a wide range of ambient temperatures from -60°C to +65°C with regulation of the object air-flow speed of 0:150% km/h, at a relative humidity of 0:100%.

Across the network:

The picture below shows a detailed complex operation scheme:

Unfortunately, during out visit, lots of the equipment had already been gone, so in some cases there will be pictures of other authors.

Aside from the aeroclimatic camera itself, the facility hosts a laboratory and an archive.
