Air crash in Egypt: Was the Russian plane shot down?

Air crash in Egypt: Was the Russian plane shot down?. Russian plane crashes in Egypt

Russian Transport Minister Maxim Sokolov denied the information, according to which Airbus A321 of Kogalymavia allegedly crashed after it was shot down by anti-aircraft missile fired by terrorists.

"There is a variety of information appearing in media outlets saying that the Russian passenger airliner en route from Sharm el-Sheikh to St. Petersburg, was reportedly shot down by an anti-aircraft missile fired by terrorists. This information can not be considered reliable," the minister said.

"I want to repeat that according to the data that we have available at the moment, based on our work contacts with the Egyptian side, the information asserting that the plane was shot down can not be considered reliable," said Sokolov.

Earlier, it was reported that it was the Egyptian branch of the Islamic State terrorist group that claimed responsibility for the tragedy.

Meanwhile, spokespeople for Kogalymavia see no reason to believe that it was the human factor that caused the tragedy in Egypt. According to the airline, the captain of the crashed A-321 airliner had the experience of more than 12,000 flight hours.

The aircraft was completely serviceable, and the crew consisted of experienced pilots, so the company does not know what could cause the catastrophe, Pravda.Ru reports with reference to Interfax.

However, it was previously reported that the crew of the Airbus-321 requested landing at the nearest airport before the plane disappeared from radar screens.

It was also said that a week before the crash, the pilots of the aircraft had repeatedly complained of engine problems.

The airliner was flying at an altitude of 9,000 meters, when the crew captain contacted air traffic controllers and requested landing in connection with a radio station failure. Shortly after that, the contact with the aircraft was lost.

On November 1, Russia will mourn the victims of passenger jet that crashed in Egypt. President Putin signed a decree declaring November 1 the day of national mourning in Russia.

Spokespeople for the Federal Air Transport Agency noted that it did not make sense to put forward and discuss possible versions of the aircrash in Egypt. The reason of the tragedy will be established on the basis of reliable and verified information.

Air crash in Egypt: Was the Russian plane shot down?. Plane crash in Egypt

Flight 9268 Airbus A321 of Kogalymavia (Metrojet brand) with Russian tourists on board crashed in Egypt in the morning of October 31. Pravda.Ru asked an expert opinion from test pilot Magomed Tolboyev.

"First and foremost, it is too early to speak about the causes of the disaster. We can only guess, for the time being. There are always three factors that may lead to such a disaster: it is the personal, the human factor, the crew; the technical condition of an aircraft; an external impact on the aircraft.

"If the aircraft was flying, then it means that there was an adequate permission for that from Rosaviation. If the aircraft took off and was flying normally, then it means that everything was fine with the crew. The third factor remains: someone interfered and did something that led to either a breakdown or an explosion. Most likely, there was an explosion. I am led to believe that the third option is most likely the cause of the air crash: it was either a terrorist act, an explosion or something else," Magomed Tolboyev told Pravda.Ru.

2015/10/30

The Nizhny Novgorod region of Russia and the Republic of Belarus have defined the main areas of cooperation in the field of industry. This was announced during the expert-media tour and seminar titled "Energy for the future of the Unified State."

According to the Nizhny Novgorod Minister for Industry, Trade and Entrepreneurship Alexander Makarov, during the first eight months of this year, Belarus was ranked second among 136 countries in terms of commodity circulation with the Nizhny Novgorod region. It is the Nizhny Novgorod region that prepared the project of the first-ever nuclear power plant in Belarus. The NPP is currently being built in the Grodno region with the assistance of Russian experts.

"Nizhny Novgorod region companies actively develop cooperation with Belarusian companies, including in the development of new products," said Alexander Makarov.

What can Putin and Sarkozy do together?

2015/10/30
What can Putin and Sarkozy do together?. Vladimir Putin and Nicolas Sarkozy

Nicolas Sarkozy, the leader of the French Republican Party, paid a private visit to Moscow. The French press reacted negatively to Sarkozy's visit to Russia. According to French newspapers, Sarkozy, having been charmed by Putin, is running anti-French policy to take revenge on President Hollande. This could be true to fact, but why does Putin need to meet Sarkozy in Moscow?

Sarkozy's visit to Russia was purely a political stunt, Thierry de Cabarrus wrote in his article for Le Nouvel Observateur under the headline "Nicolas Sarkozy visits Vladimir Putin - a mistake, and five signs of weakness" (Nicolas Sarkozy rend visite à Valdimir Poutine: une faute et 5 aveux de faiblesse).

Sarkozy's visit to Russia: Mistake or farsighted step?

Vladimir Putin is "the new master of the game in Syria, who does not hesitate to challenge the West in a dangerous confrontation." Putin receives the support from former president Nicolas Sarkozy. According to the author of the above-mentioned article, "negotiations with the dictator weaken the French diplomacy in an attempt to gain influence in his camp, while expressing the power and state wisdom that he has lost." The result will be the opposite, says Thierry, and Sarkozy will not win primary elections at the Republican party in November 2016.

The author names five signs of Nicolas Sarkozy's weakness. Firstly, Sarkozy is not a Gaullist, because his behavior comes contrary the official policy of the country and thus weakens France. This is inadmissible under the religion of de Gaulle," the article states.

Secondly, Sarkozy still thinks he is the president of France, although his candidacy did not receive electors' support in 2012. Sarkozy behaves "like a child" as if he is still in the office: he builds the "shadow cabinet" and travels abroad for the sole purpose of "shaking up" his supporters.

Thirdly, Sarkozy "went to swear allegiance to dictator Vladimir Putin." According to the French writer, one can forgive that to Depardieu - "a great actor" who feels unloved in France. Yet, one can never forgive this to a statesman, who wants to become the President of France again.

Fourthly, Thierry de Cabarrus believes that Sarkozy harbors personal dislike to sitting President Francois Hollande.

Finally, "the trip to Russia is not free of charge. "Sarkozy asked for an interview with BFM TV directly from Russia, as if it was urgent. He did not deceive anyone when he said that his lecture to students of MGIMO University (Moscow's State University of Foreign Relations) would be free. Yet, his trip to Moscow is obviously not free, and Nicolas Sarkozy is counting on media coverage to impress most naive viewers in France, who will vote for him in 2017."

Sarkozy's party fellow Thierry Mariani, who has been to the Crimea as part of an informal parliamentary delegation, believes that Sarkozy's most recent trip to Russia was reasonable. "This is not parallel diplomacy. France has been pursuing the policy of sanctions against Russia for two years already. Bravo! Never before Putin's rating has been so high. We are coming to the conclusion that the policy of sanctions has come to a standstill, - Thierry Mariani told France Info. - Sarkozy went to Moscow with a specific message that Europe must maintain a dialogue with Russia, that France plays a special role in Europe."

France needs to talk to Russia, rather than isolate her

"Sarkozy's visit can not make opposition to French diplomacy, - Pavel Timofeyev, a researcher at the Department for European Policy Studies at the Institute of World Economy told Pravda.Ru. - First of all, Sarkozy is in no way connected with the authorities of the French Republic - he only represents his own party. Secondly, given the very productive experience of relations with Russian President Putin, they have preserved a constructive relationship. I think that the visit is about building a bridge or creating a background for further cooperation."

Sarkozy is not the person who can be bought. "He has learned a lesson or two from financial scandals. While planning the second presidential campaign, he is unlikely to give food for talk," the expert said.

During his lecture to the students of MGIMO, Sarkozy said: "Isolating Russia makes no sense. One needs to talk to Russia,"said the politician. He stressed out that dialogue was absolutely necessary in the relations between Russia and France, as well as between Russia and Europe.

No one is satisfied with the current state of affairs in Syria, Sarkozy continued. According to him, one needs the coalition of the West with Russia. He also suggested refusing from the dialogue with the "Syrian opposition."

The attacks on Sarkozy in the French media indicate that certain forces want to discredit him as a presidential candidate. The hysteria shows that he is likely to win the primary elections in November. Who will be the next president of France? Hollande's chances are slim. Will it be Marine Le Pen? This is quite possible, but her policy will be even more pro-Russian.

Why does Putin need to meet Nicolas Sarkozy? On the diplomatic level, Russia works only with official authorities, but now it appears that Russia should switch to working with opposition. This is what the Americans do to strengthen their positions in the world.

Zita and Gita: World's only successfully separated Siamese twins lose each other for good

Zita and Gita: World's only successfully separated Siamese twins lose each other for good. Zita and Gita with their mother

Source: http://ift.tt/1Hg7AtG

Zita Rezakhanova, one of the Siamese twins, who were separated in 2003 by Russian surgeons, died in the republic of Kyrgyzstan. Zita died as a result of a long illness connected with multiple organ failure - a condition when several systems of the human body fail to perform their functions.

Zita and Gita Rezakhanova were born on October 19, 1991 in the village of Zapadnoye, Kyrgyzstan. The girls had three legs and one pelvis that had to be cut into two. Russian doctors at Moscow's Central Children's Clinical Hospital named after Filatov conducted a highly complicated surgery to separate the Siamese twins in 2003. The surgery still remains the only successful operation to separate Siamese twins who were born with one pelvis.

After the surgery, the sisters have repeatedly sought medical assistance. The twins would often fall ill and had to take medications constantly. Gita Rezakhanova currently suffers from chest pains. Doctors had repeatedly saved Zita's life as she had suffered from pyosis of internal organs.

Zita was receiving treatment in Russia. Several months ago, she asked her mother to go back to Kyrgyzstan, where she spent two months.

Zita Rezakhanova died on Thursday, October 29, in her native village of Zapadnoye. She was 24.

Zita posted her last message on her Internet page to thank her mother for life. "My mommy, my dearest, thank you for being here in this world. Thank you for all the sunshine and for the blue sky. My dearest mother, thank you. Thank you for your love and for your care. Thank you for your heart of gold, for tenderness, for your beautiful eyes. You are the best mother on the planet. I love you, my dearest, so so much!"

The funeral took place in a modest and quiet environment. It was mostly friends and family who attended. There were many journalists too, including Russian ones, RIA Novosti reports.

According to Elena Bayalinova, a representative of the Health Ministry of Kyrgyzstan, the Mufti of Russia and Acting Minister for Health of Kyrgyzstan presented their condolences to the family via telephone.

The surgery to separate Siamese twins Zita and Gita was unique, because doctors managed to save the lives of the two girls, who shared unpaired internal organs. The sisters had one bladder and three legs.

Siamese twins Zita and Gita were the only successfully separated Siamese twins in the world, who remained healthy for quite a long period of time. The sisters turned 24 in October 2015.

Russian Tu-142 bombers cause trouble for USS Ronald Reagan

Russian Tu-142 bombers cause trouble for USS Ronald Reagan. USS Ronald Reagan

Source: Wikipedia

There was only one mile of distance between the Russian bomber Tu-142 and USS Ronald Reagan. The incident happened near the Korean peninsula, where the USS was maneuvering.

According to Stars and Stripes, in the morning of October 27, Russian long-ranger bomber planes flew at the height of only 150 meters and at a distance of 1.8 kilometers from the US aircraft carrier. The US ship was conducting maneuvers with South Korean navy.

US military men tried to contact the pilots of the Tu-142, before four F/A-18 Super Hornet took off after the radio contact was not established.

"It's standard operating procedure for U.S. planes to escort aircraft flying if they are in the vicinity of a U.S. ship -- then that's standard procedure," said Navy commander William Marks. He said Russia's flyover was "safe" -- "a range of about a mile away," he said. "We do the same, it's not uncommon," he added.

Russia reviving pioneer and Komsomol movements?

2015/10/29
Russia reviving pioneer and Komsomol movements?. Pioneer and Komsomol movements are back

A national children and youth organization to assist in the socialization of children and adolescents is to appear in Russia.

President Putin has signed the decree to create the organization called "The Russian Movement of School-Children", the purpose of which is to improve the state policy in the field of education of young people, as well as form citizen personality on the basis of Russian values . The founder of the organization on behalf of the Russian Federation is the Federal Agency for Affairs of the Youth.

The movement will be coordinated with the executive branch and local government agencies with the mediation of the Russian Youth Center at the Federal Agency for Affairs of the Youth.

Noteworthy, on the 97th anniversary of the Komsomol party, Communists of Russia announced the revival of the youth organization with the historic name of the Russian Leninist Young Communist League, known for the Russian initials as VLKSM. According to party leader Maxim Suraikin, this name carries great positive energy.

The congress to bring the now-defunct organization back to life was held on October 29 in Moscow. Activists from more than 40 regions of Russia, as well as representatives of friendly organizations from the self-proclaimed People's Republics of Donetsk and Luhansk, from Hungary, Sri Lanka and South Africa took part in the meeting.

The congress adopted the resolution, the most important objective of which is "to  struggle against imperialism" and support the anti-fascist movement of the people of the Donbass and the Syrian government.

Maxim Suraikin, who asked to be addressed to as "Comrade Maxim", told Pravda.Ru why Communists of Russia decided to revive the Komsomol.

"We believe that this is a historical name that carries huge positive energy. During  Soviet years, Komsomol was like school of life for millions of Soviet people. In general, Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, played a crucial role in the fate of the country ever since the Civil War, when young communists were fighting for freedom and independence of the Soviet state. During the Great Patriotic War, Komsomol members were dying for freedom and independence of our country, for freedom from fascism around the world. Think about all those grand Komsomol construction projects - all of that still lives in people's memory," Comrade Maxim told Pravda.Ru.

"Our people understand that they need to restore this organization to make it a full-fledged and massively popular movement that in turn will help them with their problems, social issues, issues of professional growth, employment issues and all  other problems that young people face today," said Maxim Suraikin.

"Young people must know their country's history, they need to learn to love their country. We can see what has been happening in Ukraine, when young people learn the new history of their country that American historians wrote for them. As a result, fascism is rising in Ukraine, the state is collapsing. All this, including the tragedy in the south-east of Ukraine, is happening because there is no organization in Ukraine that deals with the patriotic education of young people."

The West tries to save Syrian people from Syrian people

2015/10/29
The West tries to save Syrian people from Syrian people. Syria vs. the West

Source: Pravda.Ru photo archive

The supposedly secret visit of Syrian President Bashar Assad to Moscow is still widely covered in Western media. Member of the Central Council of the National Union of Syrian Students, Naovaf Ibrahim, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Society for Solidarity with People of Libya and Syria, the leader of the anti-globalization movement of Russia, Alexander Ionov, discussed Assad's visit to Russia and the future of Russian-Syrian relations with Pravda.Ru.

"Now that Bashar Assad paid a visit to Russia, does it mean that the people of Syria are starting to win?"

Naovaf Ibrahim: "The visit of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to Russia was indeed indicative. He is the person who has been standing strong for five years. He came to Russia upon the invitation from Russian President Putin, and everything was organized very well.

"This proves that secret services of Russia and Syria work well. They knew how to come to Russia without any incidents. The Americans claim that they can control everything and never miss a fly, but they could not make Assad stay in Syria. He flew to Russia and back and everything went well.

"It is very important that he was able to leave his country that has been at war for five years. No other president could ever leave his country in case of war. The Syrian president left the keys to his country in the hands of Syrian soldiers, the people of Syria and his allies. He quietly came here to Russia for discussions.

"President Putin and Russia in general have won a lot of respect and trust among  the peoples of the Middle East. You should have seen the welcome that the people of Egypt gave Putin when he visited the country. The Syrian people celebrated Sergey Lavrov's arrival in Syria in the beginning of the crisis. Millions of people took to the streets.

"Putin has demonstrated that Bashar al-Assad is the legitimate president of the UN-recognized country. Putin has demonstrated that to the whole world, especially to Western countries that have been supplying the region with terrorists only for five years already.

"Which countries can address Syrian issues? It is only the people and the army of Syria that can do it. This is was President Bashar al-Assad clearly said. He said that there would be no future, no peace and no stability in the country, if no political decisions are made for that."

"Turkey has played a very strong destructive role for the bloodshed in Syria. Can Turkey change its position as a result of elections?"

Alexander Ionov: "Hard to say. The Western press has been propagandizing the opinion of the Western world on many issues, including the Turkish one. Generally, this is a one-sided, diffuse and primitive position.

"In Yemen, Syria, and Iraq no military success has been achieved. Turkey was dealing with the Kurds, the Americans were dealing with Iraq. Ever since the beginning of the crisis, Turkey was supporting the so-called Free Syrian Army that eventually became part of the Islamic State and currently represents Wahhabi and international terrorists acting on the territory of two states. Turkey made it possible to open the 900-kilometer border with Syria for terrorists and weapons to go through. Turkish experts were even training terrorists. Turkish President Erdogan created the so-called Kurdish Party that took a fairly good number of seats in the parliament. Yet, no one is happy with this, the Kurds are disappointed in Erdogan as well. The Turks and the Kurds are fighting in Syria - they are not struggling against ISIS. Turkey supported Khattab and other terrorists, and now, unfortunately, the country continues its revenge against the Syrian people."

"Does it make any sense at all to hold the international conference in Geneva?"

"The only hope is Russia. From the very beginning of the crisis, Russia has always given a platform and said solving the Syrian crisis was possible only through political means. The West did not let it happen, as the West had other interests. First, it was the gas pipeline to Europe, the US and its allies wanted to crush Russia, but failed. Western countries and Gulf monarchies are funding this terror around the world with Saudi Arabia being the first in the chain.

"What is the point of the Geneva conference when Western countries keep saying for several years: "We want to save the Syrian people." From whom do they want to save the Syrian people? From Syrian people? Syria has never had either internal problems or civil wars. We have always lived in peace and harmony - Christians, Muslims and members of all faiths. The West interfered in the internal affairs of another country and wanted to decide the fate of the people. Nobody gave the West the right to act so."

Hallowe'en: A European or an American Festivity?

2015/10/29
Hallowe'en: A European or an American Festivity?. 56668.jpeg

AP Photo

Hallowe'en, the Day of the Witches, All Hallows' Evening, Samhain. Day of the Dead. Pumpkins, chestnuts, new wine, mulled wine. A bonfire, to keep away the evil spirits, the Aos Sí and to bring the community together, the first festival of light in the dark winter with little or no agricultural produce. What is the meaning of all these symbols?

The end, or death, of the agricultural year in Europe happens around this time and as the centuries wore on, the Celtic peoples (and probably others) stipulated that at sunset on October 31 begins Samhain (pronounced So'win). This was a "boundary time" when the Aos Sí (bad spirits) could move easily from the underworld into our world and so bonfires were lit to cleanse the Earth from evil and to protect communities against it.

From the earliest times, children would go "mumming" or "guising", wearing disguises as monsters, witches or bad spirits, going from door to door asking for offerings of food and drink - or else people placed these outside their homes for the Aos Sí to take and be appeased.

A time of darkness and uncertainty

It was a time of darkness and uncertainty, a time when survival depended on how much food had been stored from the harvest and in what conditions it was in, a time when the wine or beer barrel was opened and which hopefully would last until Spring. It was a time when the fattened pig would be slaughtered and salted, when sausages would be made, hams smoked.

It was a time before the potato, which was brought to Europe from the region of the Andes in the sixteenth century. What substituted the potato at the time was the chestnut, especially in Southern Europe, where a chestnut festivity took place at the beginning of November around a Magnus Ustus, a Great Bonfire. As with Samhain, the date became institutionalized and was fixed on November 11, the Day of Saint Martin.

Medieval festivals carried across the waters

In Medieval times, these festivities were still very popular in Europe and were carried over to the Americas by the Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish (rest of Latin America), French and British (North America), where they continued, while they became less popular in Europe and were celebrated locally by communities. In some cases, they took on a different meaning, as was the case with Guy Fawkes' Night, or Bonfire Night, in the United Kingdom.

Guy Fawkes, an English Catholic, was part of a plot to blow up barrels of gunpowder under the House of Parliament when it was to be opened by King James VI of Scotland, James I of England (who became King of both countries upon the death of Queen Elizabeth I in 1603), on November 5, 1605. The plot was discovered, Guy Fawkes committed suicide just before he was hanged (he jumped from the gallows and broke his neck) and since then the day has been remembered throughout the UK with fireworks, bonfires, chestnuts and a stuffed doll representing the "Guy", children wheeling the doll around the villages asking for "A penny for the Guy".

But this does not begin in 1605 - as we see, the symbology is the same as that coming from ancient times and the burning of the guy resembles the burning of the scarecrow in Iberian communities around this time.

Lost traditions, but traditions with meaning, traditions and festivities which bring people together, instead of dividing them, festivities of sharing, and not stealing, festivities for the common good, to see who is needy, and festivities which provide a self-regulatory mechanism for communities based upon human warmth.

Perhaps we can learn something from history. Maybe we should research our traditions and festivals instead of relegating them to history's trash can.

Russia shall not agree to change IMF crediting rules

Russia shall not agree to change IMF crediting rules. IMF to change rules for Ukraine

Source: Pravda.Ru photo archive

To save Ukraine from default that the country may face should it fail to pay compensations for Russian bonds, the International Monetary Fund is ready to change crediting rules. The provisions will have to be amended on an international level, The Wall Street Journal said.

Should the IMF implement the initiative, Ukraine will receive a new loan in November.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Yatsenyuk still hopes that private creditors will be able to change the status of Kiev's debt to Moscow. However, Russia has repeatedly stated that the loan of three billion dollars was an official loan. Therefore, Moscow will not take part in the talks with private financial institutions to restructure the loan.

Pravda.Ru asked Alexander Karavaev, a senior officer at the Moscow State University's Center for Post-Soviet Space, to comment how the situation with the Ukrainian debt may develop further.

Also read: Why not sell Donbass to Russia?

According to the expert, the economic question has become political, because it bumps up against the implementation of the Minsk Accord.

"Kiev and Moscow may try to exchange something in an attempt to solve this debt problem," the expert said.

In November, Western countries intend to introduce amendments to crediting rules of the International Monetary Fund to give Ukraine an opportunity to receive another credit tranche in the event Kiev declares default on the debt to the Russian Federation, The Wall Street Journal said.

Doctor of Economic Sciences, Professor of Economic Policy at the St. Petersburg State University, Gennady Alpatov, told Pravda.Ru that the question was primarily a legal, rather than a political one.

"The statutes of the IMF say what Russia can do in counteraction. Russia takes part in the IMF and makes its contributions to the fund. The IMF was set up by victor states that created the international currency fund to assist governments in cases of budget deficit," said Alpatov.

Kremlin comments on NATO's intention to approach Russian borders. NATO approaching Russian borders

Source: REX

Dmitry Peskov, the official spokesman for Russian President Putin, commented on the information about the intention of NATO to increase the number of alliance troops on Russia's borders.

According to Peskov, the alliance has been discussing the initiative for a long time, and Moscow is aware of that. Moreover, Peskov added, Moscow knows how to respond to NATO.

NATO spokesman Jerzy Biziewski has recently stated that NATO's rapid deployment forces were set on high alert.

"This is NATO approaching our borders. This is not a new phenomenon. This is a phenomenon the danger of which we have been emphasizing for years from the point of view of its consequences," Peskov said.

Noteworthy, US officials stated in the summer of 2015 that the Pentagon was going to deploy heavy military hardware near Russia's borders. Russian officials responded that they would respond symmetrically, deploying troops to western borders.

USA was seconds away from striking nuclear blow on USSR

USA was seconds away from striking nuclear blow on USSR. Nuclear war between USA and USSR

Source: Fotodom/Rex Features

The United States has declassified information about the officer, who prevented the start of a nuclear war during the Cuban missile crisis.

The information was exposed in an interview with the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists by one of the participants of events that took place on 28 October 1961.

According to the report, the global catastrophe was prevented owing to the actions of Captain William Bassett, who received an order at a military base in Okinawa (Japan) to launch 32 Mace B cruise missiles. The missiles were equipped with Mark 28 bombs. An explosion of one of such bombs is equal to 1.1 megatons of TNT, which is 70 times more powerful than the bombs the Americans dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The missiles could cover the distance of 1,400 miles (about 2,300 km). The cities of Hanoi, Beijing, Pyongyang and Vladivostok are located at this distance (or less) from Okinawa.

Eight crews consisting of seven members in each were supposed to launch the nuclear missiles with one officer being responsible for four missiles. Captain William Bassett was commanding one of those crews. He was worried about two things. The first part of the targets that came in the order was located outside the Soviet Union. Secondly, the US military command had not ordered a combat readiness change from DEFCON 2 - on the brink of a nuclear war - to DEFCON 1 - maximum readiness, even though it would have taken the Pentagon a few minutes to do that.

Also read: USA creates Fourth Reich to destroy Russia

Despite the fact that the codes in the messages coincided with the codes in the secret envelope, meaning that the order was not a training one, Captain Bassett decided to check the accuracy of the order. Bassett contacted other commanders and asked them to double-check the order at the control center. Bassett lied by saying that the second part of the code was unreadable.

To stop another crew from launching its missiles at the targets inside the Soviet Union, Bassett sent armed men to the neighboring post, having ordered them to shoot those who could try to launch the missiles before the order to raise the combat readiness level to DEFCON 1.

The order to launch the missiles was eventually withdrawn, and the story about it was classified.

A similar story occurred in the Soviet Union, when Lieutenant Colonel Stanislav Petrov, having received the information about the output of US missiles at the start, decided to double-check the data, instead of immediately reporting the nuclear attack to the administration of the country.

Petrov only had a few minutes to think everything over. He decided to inform the command of the false alarm. He was right: it turned out that the intelligence computer failed in analyzing intelligence data.

The Environment and the Economy of Accumulation

2015/10/28
The Environment and the Economy of Accumulation. 56662.jpeg

One must be careful, at least for two specific points of the economy, which act to promote intense pressure on the environment: 1) the dynamics of industrial capitalism is consolidated through more production and consumption, thus more economic growth; 2) the level of natural resource extraction to "feed" the production process cannot, under any circumstances, exceed regeneration since passing this point implies the complete exhaustion of physical base that serves as a support to economic activity.

Marcus Eduardo de Oliveira

That said, the following statement is believable: the world economy can no longer "work" - the way it has worked - under the paradigm of growth/accumulation. This assertion leads to the conclusion that the challenge ahead if there is interest in preserving the living conditions on the planet, is one: look for "fit" economic activity within the ecosystem boundaries.

Environmental crisis

Failure to comply with these limits, from the moment that economic activity appropriates nature, disrupts the environment, generating as a "final product" pollution (see especially the Chinese case, with more than 700,000 deaths per year) and  global warming.

This is the central issue of environmental crisis. Not surprisingly, humanity is already using 30% more than the bearable limit of the world's resources - regrettably, as we assimilate the overshoot (overflow) with a certain naturalness.

Today, they are extracted 60 billion tons of resources annually; 30 years ago, this extraction was only 30 billion tons.

In these past 30 years of intensive resource extraction, "we managed", without much skill, but with such aggressiveness, to get close to the depletion of 60% of the key ecosystem services; just pay attention to the current situation of fish (of the 17 known fish stocks, 11 of them have withdrawal rates higher than the replenishing capacity. Also in relation to fish, 75% of world stocks of the most commonly sold species in the world are at the limit of their resilience or beyond that limit. Between 1995 and 2005, some species such as cod, haddock, whiting and flounder have fallen 95% in the North Atlantic), forest shrinkage (every minute the earth loses 21 hectares of forests, equivalent to 42 football fields), deterioration of grasslands and drylands (of known firm land in the world, 4 billion hectares are exhausted. Every year, we lose more than 7 million hectares. This is 20 000 hectares per day, which is equivalent to a daily surface that is twice the size of Paris), we contaminate water reservoirs, see a spike in elevated carbon dioxide levels (every minute 10 tons of carbon dioxide are released into the atmosphere) and the steady disappearance of species (defaunation - the International Union for Conservation of Nature estimates that, worldwide, around 11% of bird species, 25% of mammals, 25% of amphibians, 20% of reptiles, 34% of fish and 12% of plants are under threat of disappearing forever in the next hundred years).

Therefore, the relationship between production-consumption-economic growth-emission of greenhouse gas (GHG)-environmental and ecological-loss is closely interconnected.

Growth is based upon climate change

Because economic output is based upon thermodynamics - although for the heralds of neoclassical economics this may sound absurd - it simply becomes impossible to separate economic growth from GHG emissions and, of course, the result of all this: climate and environmental imbalance.

Aggravating the situation further, humanity seems to have redoubled its voracious appetite for consumer goods (the dynamics of capitalist accumulation, driven primarily by the Americans, has focused on the financial sphere making credit and household debt - fundamental elements for " high "purchasing power), since, clearly, we are living in the era of an accumulation economy, since economic output, in this last century, is "not based on the capital of the planet, but its stock", to use the words of French environmentalist Dominique Voynet.

Swallowed by the consumer, we increasingly step hard on the accelerator of economic growth, without, however, realizing that  soon ahead, on the "road" where we are heading, we will find a huge chasm that will suck everyone in, rich and poor , developed or emerging, since this "Road" is the same for everyone, with a one-way direction.

Russia participates in international study to mitigate Greenhouse Effect

2015/10/28
Russia participates in international study to mitigate Greenhouse Effect. 56661.jpeg

Can we estimate the annual contribution of forests to mitigate the greenhouse effect?

An unprecedented international study, just published in "Nature Plants" magazine, of the renowned group "Nature", assessed the mechanism for the formation and growth of tree rings and their carbon acquisition dynamics, contributing to better understand the global cycle carbon and the phenomenon of climate change.

International research group

This study brought together 33 researchers from 12 countries (Austria, Canada, China, Slovenia, Spain, Finland, France, Portugal, Czech Republic, Russia and Switzerland). The Portuguese team is made up of three researchers from the Centre for Functional Ecology (CEF), University of Coimbra (UC).

Whereas the formation and development of tree rings interfere in the procurement process and accumulation of carbon, the researchers studied over three years, the mechanism which forms the rings in forests with different climates.

Besides contributing to the "understanding of the global carbon cycle ', which has undergone profound changes over time, this study could' enable researchers to estimate the amount of carbon sequestered annually by forests, ie assess the contribution of trees in controlling carbon dioxide (CO2). Forests are major long-term CO2 tanks but the dynamics of this process is still poorly understood," notes Cristina Nabais, coordinator of the Portuguese team.

Important signals provided by tree rings

Tree rings "provide important climate signals and therefore, if we understand the mechanics involved in their formation and growth, as well as the impacts that mechanics has in carbon accumulation, we have clues to predict future responses of forests in the complex problem of climate change," says Philip Campelo, another of the Portuguese researchers involved in the research.

The study showed that the formation of the rings is highly sensitive to daylength (hours of exposure to light), the carbon accumulation process in the rings being most sensitive to temperature, and also that the carbon building dynamics is very different among forests Mediterranean and temperate forests of northern Europe, an important piece of data to understand the relative contribution of these forests to the carbon cycle.

Russia in WTO: Hard to go in, much harder to go out

2015/10/28
Russia in WTO: Hard to go in, much harder to go out. Russia WTO membership

Source: Pravda.Ru photo archive

Ukraine filed a lawsuit against Russia at the WTO after Russia restricted imports of Ukrainian rail carriages and crossing pieces. What consequences does this lawsuit may entail for Russia and Ukraine. Who's the boss at the WTO? Pravda.Ru conducted an interview on the subject with Ruslan Dzarasov, a senior officer at the Russian Economic University.

"Now that Ukraine sued Russia at the WTO, do you think that this is a purely economic dispute?"

"Of course, there is a political aspect to it. Ukraine says that it has suffered considerable losses after Russia stopped buying Ukrainian railway equipment in 2013. The commodity turnover in the field declined from 1 billion 700 million dollars a year to only 50 million dollars. This is a part of the sanctions war between Russia and Ukraine.

"Ukraine is trying to take advantage of its current situation, because now is the time when Ukraine has to pay its debt. Ukraine does not have three billion dollars that it owes to Russia, that's why the country is playing this game."

"Will it be possible to settle the dispute extrajudicially?"

"This is not the first lawsuit from Ukraine to Russia. This one is especially serious, though. Most likely, the case will last for two or three years. The WTO is an international organization that stays under effective control of highly developed Western countries. They use the WTO for their own economic and political interests. Russia is deeply involved in the crisis in Ukraine and in the international conflict around it, and they will try to use the WTO against Russia too."

"Why doesn't Russia sue Ukraine for its debt for natural gas?"

"This is primarily a political question for Russia. In response to the actions of the Ukrainian pro-American regime in the Donbass, Russia must take a tough position without making concessions in the form of discounts for natural gas. For some reason that I do not understand, Russia has not used its economic weapons yet. Russia must ask for its debt to be paid properly. The Russian economy is a lot less dependent on the Ukrainian economy."

"In 20 years of the WTO history, as many as 499 lawsuits have been filed at the organization. Is there anything in common between those disputes?"

"They are mostly lawsuits from developed countries against developing ones. Weak economies are incapable of defending their interests at such international organizations. As far as I know, there were no lawsuits from African countries. There were no lawsuits from Russia either. Russia is much more powerful than Africa, of course, but it still does not have enough tools to win at the WTO, because it is the Western transnational capital that prevails at the WTO. They use their own mechanisms to force developing countries open their economies. The relations between Ukraine and the European Union are a bright example for that.

"Yanukovych rejected the agreement for Ukraine's association with the EU, because he would have had to invest 160 billion euros in the efforts to bring Ukrainian goods in conformity with 20,000 technical regulations of EU standards. The new Ukrainian administration signed the agreement, but Russia will have to raise tariff barriers for Ukrainian goods. Otherwise, cheap and tariff-free consumer goods from Europe will inundate the markets of Russia and other countries of the Customs Union, which Russia can never afford. The introduction of this agreement means that Ukraine is losing the Russian market without being able to enter the European market either."

"If Russia starts doing something like that, they will use WTO lawsuits against Russia."

"Is there any disagreement inside the WTO among developed states?"

"They have some. To control global economy, Western countries unite and cooperate. For example, the USA provides nuclear protection for Western Europe. US troops in Europe strengthen the influence of the United States on European elites. Europe makes certain concessions in return. One can often hear US experts saying that Europe owes a lot to the USA."

"Does Russia need to pull out from the WTO now?"

"The WTO has created favorable conditions only for our exporters. Russian exporters, unlike Chinese ones, do not work in the processing industry. Russia primarily exports fuel. The WTO affected the Russian processing industry highly negatively. I am convinced that Russia's WTO membership has more minuses than pluses. At the same time, pulling out from the WTO is a hard nut to crack. Such a move entails huge penalties. Yet, anti-Russian sanctions go against the market ideology of the WTO and create force majeure reasons for Russia. Legally, Russia has a full right to use them to put its WTO membership into question without paying all those fines and penalties. This would be Russia's move to protect its national interests."

Refugee Crisis: Surprise, it's the Russians (again)

2015/10/28
Refugee Crisis: Surprise, it's the Russians (again). Refugee crisis in Europe

Source: Pravda.Ru photo archive

By Hans Vogel

Mr Janis Sarts, director of NATO's "Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence" (Stratcom), basis in Riga, has declared that Russian nationalists are to blame for the rise in racism in Europe. Of course we have known all along that NATO specializes in conspiracy theories (and in bombing defenseless civilians), but the drivel emanating from its Latvian branch is just the height of stupidity.

What Stratcom calls "racism" is mostly the reaction of desperate members of the European native middle and underclasses to the tsunami of refugees currently flooding their neighborhoods. (On the one hand the US deserves admiration for its rapidity and perseverance in recruiting and training hundreds of little European Quislings to carry out orders from Washington. On the other hand, the US government displayed its usual hubris and general lack of knowledge about the world in selecting just the wrong people, Mr. Sarts being a case in point.)

Seldom in history have ruling elites shown the extent of contempt of the current EU political class towards its constituents.. Since 2008, when Europe was plunged into a crisis that is becoming more serious by the day, governments have been cutting budgets. It is especially the spending on social programs, housing, health care and education that has been cut most drastically. But it was no problem to spend countless millions on bombing Libya back to the Middle Ages, it is no problem to spend millions in arms and training for ISIS, Al Nusra, Al Qaeda and other terrorist gangs across the Near East. Nor is it a problem to outlay billions of Euros to buy a US fighter plane (JSF) that is about the most inferior kind of military hardware ever devised by US technology (and that is no mean feat in itself!).

In the meantime, the elderly in Western Europe have their pensions cut, retirement age has been increased to 67 years, the elderly and sick can only get a shower once a week, and there is hardly any personnel left to take care of them. Unemployment is rising consistently (currently 50% for young people in Italy, Greece, Spain) and there are no signs or even serious expectations of improvement. Except for the rich, who are becoming richer as the poor are becoming poorer and the middle class is dwindling. To put it succinctly: the welfare state in Europe is being dismantled.

And then, in the summer of 2015, all of a sudden, out of the blue hundreds of thousands of "refugees" decide to come to Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Sweden. Chancellor Merkel extends them a warm welcome and announces there is no limit to the number of these "refugees" that Germany will take in, as a result of which the columns of migrants grow even longer.

More than two thirds of the "refugees" are men between 20 and 50 years of age. That in itself is not unusual, since initial waves of immigration are always largely masculine. That is because historically, people migrate in search of work (and better living conditions). But there no work in Europe, nor will there be in the future. Moreover, German industry is reeling under the US-ordered sanctions against Russia for the alleged shooting down of the MH17 jetliner in 2014. (Another US/NATO conspiracy theory, by the way.) As I said earlier, that is why I think the "refugees" are being brought in to accelerate the imposition of martial law in the EU. Why else would responsible politicians so blatantly ignore the wishes of their constituents? Therefore, there just has got to be evil intent on the part of the political class. The constituents, by now desperate, are wondering what they can still do to have their rulers listen to them. Apparently, not much. Now even innocent Pegida is being outlawed, courtesy of Mr. Sarts. The EU ruling elites are stooping to even lower depths in trying to blame "Russian nationalists" for the rise in "racism". In doing so, I am sure they are stupid enough to actually believe this nonsense, deceiving themselves in the process.

The whole thing would actually be completely laughable, if it weren't so serious. The extent of stupidity and evil to which the European political class has sunk does not portend well for the future. These people, whether they are called Merkel, Juncker, Hollande, Rutte, Cameron, Tusk or whatever their names might be, are cheap impostors and crooks with blood on their hands.

The human drama they are directing and presiding over has already claimed many victims. There will be many more when winter sets and when desperation among both the European underclass and "refugees" mounts.

Actually, the best thing the European underclass and the new migrants could do is to form a common front against the political classes that are deceiving them. Heck, those thousands of military-age males would actually be a welcome reinforcement to help storm the EU palaces and government buildings!

Yet I believe the political elite will beat them to it. After all, they have been in power ever since the end of World War II and their US bosses will not tolerate a truly democratic and free Europe.

Oh, and one more thing: with the kind of ruthless, arrogant rulers they imposed on them, the Europeans do not need any "Russian nationalists" to help them become radicals. As a matter of fact, they are perfectly capable of radicalizing by themselves. I suggest Mr Sarts keep that in mind.

Hans Vogel

Inside Russian airbase in Syria. Pravda.Ru exclusive

2015/10/28

The aircraft of the Russian Air Force deployed at Hmeimim air base bomb the positions of the Islamic State almost 24 hours a day. Recently, the air strikes have become even more frequent as Islamic militants now have the support of their followers from Iraq. Photographer Vadim Savitsky prepared a report for Pravda.Ru about the life of the Russian troops in Syria.

The Russian aviation group in Syria has Su-24M bombers and multi-purpose fourth generation fighter-bombers Su-34, Su-25SM fighter jets and Su-30 fighters that protect attack aircraft from air. All the aircraft are properly maintained and serviced at Hmeimim airbase.

A US reporter who has recently visited the Russian base in Syria, saw nice rows of air conditioned houses, from two to eight people living in them. There are also many shower booths at the base.

The Associated Press reporter was amazed that the technical staff wear white sports sneakers and shorts that come into great contrast with dull gray military uniforms of Soviet times. The Russian army differs from the Soviet army not only outwardly, but also mentally, the American journalist noted.

Russia rises 11 places up on World Bank's Doing Business ranking. Russia in Doing Business

Source: Pravda.Ru photo archive

Russia has improved its Doing Business indicators - the ranking that the World Bank prepares every year.

According to the most recent data, Russian is ranked 51st on the list. Last year, Russia was 62nd and in 2013 - 92nd. According to NTV, Russia is only 0.02 points lower than Peru that was put on the 50th place.

The World Bank noted in the report that Russia implemented five economic reforms during one year. The reforms thus contributed to Russia's improving positions on the list.

Improving the environment for doing business is one of the strategic tasks of the state. Global Doing Business rating is one of the landmark goals for achieving progress in this area. In May of this year, President Putin signed a decree to improve Russia's position on the rating from the 120th place in 2011 to the 50th in 2015 and to the 20th in 2018.

The police of St. Petersburg are looking for a young man, who attacked the driver of commuter bus №172. The young man, a passenger, refused to get off the bus.

The man was standing in the doorway and refused to go out of the bus. When he was finally pushed out of the bus, the man fell on the ground. The driver approached the man, but the latter stood up to his feet and punched the bus driver on his head, knocking him out instantly, Pravda.Ru reports with reference to Fontanka. The attacker escaped from the scene.

Another absurd incident happened at a school in the United States, where a police officer used violence against a female student, who refused to leave the class room. The officer twisted her arms, hit her on the back and dragged the girl out of the room by her hair.

Arkhangelsk region Governor demands thorough attention be paid to fishery quotas

2015/10/28

28.10.2015 |

Russia has been ranked fifth or sixth in the world on the extraction of biological water resources during the recent years, although there are still many problems in the industry.

A meeting of the presidium of the State Council for the development of the fish industry discussed the challenges of the industry and ways for their solutions.

One of the most controversial initiatives was the introduction of "state support quotas." Authors suggest distributing up to 20 percent of allocated quotas between the companies that have built ships at Russian shipyards.

The Governor of the Arkhangelsk region, Igor Orlov, urged everyone to have a cautious approach to the issue.

"I am particularly concerned about the historical principle of distributing quotas for a long-term period of time to ensure the predictability of business. It goes about the responsibility of quota users to saturate the domestic market with affordable fishery products, ensure the operation of fishing and fish processing capacities and develop coastal areas. All this requires a special approach and state regulation in the question of innovations that relate to the allocation of quotas for investment purposes," Igor Orlov noted in his speech at the meeting of the State Council.

The head of the Arkhangelsk region called for the preservation of regional quotas in the coastal fishery.

"The issue of quotas is very important for those employed in the fishing industry, - the chairman of the Interregional Association of Fishery Managers of the North Coastal Basin, Valentin Balashov, said in an interview with Pravda.Ru. He noted that remaking the current quota system would be profitable only to certain companies, but not to the country on the whole.

Officials with Russia's Defense Ministry confirmed the death of a Russian contract serviceman at Hmeimim air base in Syria. The serviceman committed suicide, officials said.

"The contractual servicemen, who served at Hmeimim airbase as a technician, committed suicide during rest after duty service. We are investigating all  the circumstances of the tragedy," officials with the press service of the Russian Defense Ministry told The Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper.

Prior to committing suicide, the man was corresponding with his girlfriend on his cellular phone. Judging from text messages, one may conclude the relations between the soldier and his girlfriend came to an end. Most likely, the break up became the reason for the suicide, officials said.

Noteworthy, foreign journalists have recently paid a visit to Russia's Hmeimim air base in Syria. The reporters had a chance to look how Russian servicemen live and work at the base.

US ready to cooperate with Russia, albeit not for the destruction of ISIS

US ready to cooperate with Russia, albeit not for the destruction of ISIS. USA vs. Russia in Syria

Washington does not exclude a possibility of cooperation with Moscow for the political settlement of the crisis in Syria. At the same time, US officials say that the two sides are not ready for the dialogue.

According to US State Department spokesman John Kirby, if Russia wants to play a constructive role in dealing with the Islamic State, the United States is ready for such a conversation, although the sides have not come to the point when this partnership could be possible.

In fact, the USA's approach to Russia's actions in Syria has not changed. Washington is still ready to see Moscow as a partner to achieve the so-called "political transition" - i.e. a regime change in Damascus. Yet, the US is not ready to cooperate with Russia to struggle against the Islamic State terrorist group.

Nevertheless, it is Russia that plays the leading role in resolving the situation in the Middle East. Air operations in Syria make Russia a key player in the Middle East, ousting the United States from the position.

The US intends to intensify air raids on terrorist-controlled oil deposits in Syria.

According to the Financial Times, the head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the US Armed Forces, Joseph Dunford, said Tuesday that the USAF would conduct more aggressive air strikes to prevent the Islamic State from receiving income from the oil business.

Currently, the Islamic State is the richest terrorist organization in the world. Iraqi cleric Sheikh Abu Sa'd al-Ansari unveiled the budget of the organization for 2015 - $2 billion, and this is a surplus  budget in the amount of $250 million, Pravda.Ru reports to the Kommersant newspaper.

Iraq: Tony Blair, the Chilcot Inquiry, "Sir Cover Up" - Is the Legal Net Tightening?

2015/10/27
Iraq: Tony Blair, the Chilcot Inquiry,

AP Photo

"The individual is handicapped by coming face to face with a conspiracy so monstrous he cannot believe it exists."  (J.Edgar Hoover, 1895-1972.)

Just five days after it was revealed that former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and then President George W. Bush had made a pact to attack Iraq and overthrow the country's sovereign government a full year before the invasion took place - as Blair continued to mislead government and populace stating that diplomacy was being pursued and no decisions made - another snake has slithered from under the hay (as the Arab saying goes) in the form of Sir Jeremy Heywood.

Felicity Arbuthnot

Sir Jeremy who has been unkindly dubbed "Sir Cover Up" by sections of the media is Prime Minister David Cameron's Cabinet Secretary, thus the UK's top Civil Servant.

According to the Daily Mail, Sir Jeremy has: "insisted he did not deserve his reputation as the secretive and manipulative power behind the throne" and was "frustrated" at his public portrayal.

However:

"Sources close to the Iraq Inquiry claim it was held up for months while chairman Sir John Chilcot argued with Sir Jeremy about which documents could be put in the public domain.

Censored messages

"In the end, Sir Jeremy insisted that 150 messages between Tony Blair and George Bush in the run-up to the 2003 war must be censored. Only the 'gists' of the messages and selected quotes will be released. (Emphasis mine.)

"Former Shadow Home Secretary David Davis said it was 'wholly inappropriate' that Sir Jeremy had been involved in decisions on the Iraq Inquiry, given his role as Mr. Blair's Private Secretary at the time of the war."

Sir Jeremy was Principal Private Secretary to Tony Blair from June 1999 to July 2003 and would thus have been party to every step of the scheming and untruths about the invasion and surely the plotting between Bush and Blair to attack, during their April 2002, three day meeting at the Bush ranch in Crawford, Texas.

Subsequently Heywood stepped in to the same position when Gordon Brown became Prime Minister after Blair's resignation, a post he held between January 2008 and May 2010, so would also have been party to the plans for and structure of the Chilcot Inquiry in to the war, which was set up by Brown. Thus those involved in the bloodbath and invasion, convened the Inquiry in to the illegality.

Gordon Brown as Blair's Chancellor of the Exchequer, wrote the cheques for the years of illegal UK bombings of Iraq and for the UK's participation in "Operation Iraqi Liberation" (OIL.) He also wrote the cheques for Britain's part in the disastrous invasion of Afghanistan.

Eight point four billion pound tab

According to Ministry of Defence figures, the total cost of UK military operation in Iraq, 2003-2009, was £8.4 Billion - ongoing since they are back bombing, with Special Forces in Northern Iraq - and it would be unsurprising if also elsewhere in the country, given Britain's duplicitous track record. To 2013 the cost of UK operations in Afghanistan reached £37 Billion, also ongoing.

David Cameron who voted to attack Iraq told a news programme at the time: "You've got to do what you think right, even if it's unpopular ...", near mirroring Blair's "I know I'm right" of the same time. Cameron admires Blair, regarding him as a "mentor." At every level of government past and present, there are vested interests in the truth on Iraq never coming out.

Cameron's words on his election as Prime Minister come to mind again: "We're all in it together."

Of Sir Jeremy, political commentator Peter Oborne has written: "Heywood is a perfect manifestation of everything that has gone so very wrong with the British civil service over the past 15 years."

On Thursday, 22nd October, in a debate in the House of Lords, Tony Blair's former Attorney General (May 1997-July1999) Lord Morris of Aberavon cited the "scandalous delay" in producing the Chilcot Report.

Sir John Chilcot's Inquiry took evidence between November 2009 and 2ndFebruary 2011. Costing £10 million (and rising) the final Report is now not expected until summer 2016 and maybe even sometime in 2017.

The families and friends of the 179 British service people who died had been "badly let down" by the delays, stated his Lordship. Indeed, but, tragic as the whole Iraq horror is for the UK's bereaved, their sons, daughters, relatives, signed up to join the armed forces, trained extensively in killing other human beings and had the lawful right, if in conscience they believed it wrong, illegal, to refuse to serve.

In their debate their Lordships devoted no time to the grief of the relatives of the over one million Iraqi dead, the 800,000 Iraqi children who have lost one or both parents, the million widows, the maimed, the limbless, those who lost their minds, homes, all, in the horror, who also are "badly let down", their need for answers paramount. Only Lord Dykes in just two lines referred to: " ... the fate of Iraqi civilians. That should be a substantial part of this report."

Lord Dykes also encapsulated the hitherto unspoken questions:

*"Why was it so important for them to turn on Saddam Hussein if regime change was not the main driver?

*"Why did Tony Blair have those embarrassing exchanges in 2002 when there was no question of there being any declaration of war?

*"Why did the then Government ignore the instinct and feelings of 1.5 million people marching down Piccadilly to protest about what was still an illegal war?

*"Why did the Americans and the British ignore the wise advice of the French Government under President Chirac and Foreign Secretary Dominique de Villepin about the mistake of going to war on that occasion?"

In a surely clear reference to Sir Jeremy Heywood, Lord Morris said that: " ...  the saddest feature of the inquiry process was the 'strenuous effort' of the Cabinet Office to block the committee from having access to 'swathes of vital documentation,' including notes from Blair to Bush" adding: " Respect for good governance is undermined if Reports don't see the light of day before issues become dimmed in public memory."

Lord Parekh also referred to the "delay" caused by: "the dispute over access to various documents", Sir Jeremy's spectre stalked the Chamber:

"For example, it took nearly a year to obtain the Blair-Bush correspondence and the notes Mr Blair is supposed to have left with Mr Bush, to read them and to decide whether to include them in the report."

Baroness Falkner was surely also referring to Blair and Cameron's ally, "Sir Cover Up" when she said:

"Looking at the sequencing of events, it is clear that there was some kind of stand-off between the Cabinet Secretary and the Inquiry team, which lasted for a while ... it took from July 2012 to January 2015 to reach an agreement on publishing the Blair-Bush correspondence." And does that refer to the "censored" version?

Lady Falkner made a vital point regarding David Cameron's desire to emulate Blair in visiting a full scale "Shock and Awe" on another devastated country which poses Britain no threat and which would be as unlawful as Iraq:

"I want to pick up the issue of our continuing intervention in the Middle East. Let us go back to the August 2013 vote on not intervening in Syria. We as a country cannot, and should not, make a decision on that until we know of our hand in setting that region ablaze in the first instance. That is the least we owe the country."

Earl Attlee had hands on experience having served as a Territorial Army Officer in Iraq during the Invasion had clearly had enough of prevarications:

"I do not believe that democratic leaders can lead a country to war without being held to account for the decisions that they made on our behalf. I could see the 'dodgy dossier' for what it was ... "

Baroness Williams was equally scathing, demanding: " ... the truest possible account of this, which I think is the second-gravest mistake ever made in the history of the United Kingdom's foreign policy after the end of the Second World War."

Comparing the Iraq disaster to the 1956 Suez crisis in "scale" and "effect", she stated:

"Today, when we look at what has been tragically not only an attempt to try to invade Iraq but, perhaps more crucially, an attempt to see the Middle East fade away into a situation where there is almost no legally available support, let us not forget that an invasion based on the argument that you need regime change has no place in international law and no place in the United Nations." (Emphasis mine.)

In context, Suez has been described as: " ... one of the most important and controversial events in British history since the Second World War. Not only did Suez result in deep political and public division in Britain, it also caused international uproar."

"It has come to be regarded as the end of Britain's role as one of the world powers and as the beginning of the end for the British Empire."

Suez led to the downfall of Prime Minister Anthony Eden whom, it was widely believed, had mislead Parliament over the degree of collusion between Britain and Israel.

Tony Blair also mislead Parliament, including over the extent of his collusion with George W. Bush. Ironically he has also been described as: "having an unremitting record of bias toward Israel." (Electronic Intifada, 29th June 2007.) When he was - Orewellianly - appointed "Middle East Peace Envoy", he was described as: "A true friend of the State of Israel" by then Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and: "a very well appreciated figure in Israel" by then Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni.

Eden and Blair may have more in common regarding their actions in the Middle East than meet the eye. Eden however simply sunk in to obscurity whereas the clamour for Blair to account for his actions grow ever louder. The petition to Parliament for his arrest for war crimes and misleading the nation has nearly reached the required 10,000 when it is mandatory for the Prime Minister to respond. At 100,000 a Parliamentary debate can be called.

The Leader of the Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn told BBC Newsnight that Blair could see a war crimes trial over the: "illegal Iraq invasion."

This site established by journalist George Monbiot: "offers a reward to people attempting a peaceful citizen's arrest of the former Prime Minister, Tony Blair, for crimes against the peace." So far five credible attempts have been made and around £13,000 paid out.

As events are unfolding there may soon be no more wriggle room for all those involved in the lies and cover ups. Their Nuremberg may yet await. It is owed to those who lost their lives for a pack of lies. For the people of Iraq it is a sacred accounting, a debt of ultimate honour and a woefully inadequate apology which might at least demand reparations.

'Astronauts' can not be 'cosmonauts' because first man in space was Russian

2015/10/27
'Astronauts' can not be 'cosmonauts' because first man in space was Russian. Yuri Gagarin

It was customary for many Russians and still remains so for some to diminish themselves in front of the West. In the West, the trend is the opposite: to diminish all other nations in the name of the  glory and power of the West. The West has done a lot for the human civilization, but they want to bite a bigger piece from somebody else's pie as well. In the USA, for example, there are many of those, who sincerely believe that it was the USA that won WWII.

He who pays the piper calls the tune, especially in computer games and Hollywood blockbusters. Michael Bay's "Pearl Harbor" is a good example at this point. It seems unbelievable, but in 60 years the Americans managed to gain huge profit from the tragedy in the field of cinematography.

Let's go back to real life. Who was the first to come up with the idea of concentration camps? Was it the Bolsheviks or German Nazis? Not at all - it was their Anglo-Saxon brethren. Their followers across the Atlantic developed the idea and put 120,000 Japanese people into concentration camps in 1942. There was no notion of political correctness back then, and the camps were referred to as war relocation centers, similarly to the long-standing habit of our "partners" to designate Chechen terrorists as "insurgents" and "rebels", while calling Novorossiya militia forces "pro-Russian separatists." Is it the reason why the Americans called their cosmonauts 'astronauts,' as if 'cosmos' is not a Greek world, just because world's first man in space was Russian?

Sixty-two percent of 120,000 interned Japanese people in the US became US citizens. In 1942, President Franklin Roosevelt signed emergency decree No. 9066, according to which military authorities established expulsion zones and could displace people of any nationality. Understanding xenophobia in a country where all residents are migrants, excluding the exterminated or forcibly exiled indigenous population, is hard indeed.

The day after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, on Dec. 8, 1941, President Roosevelt signed Presidential Proclamation Nr. 2526 that created the legal basis to restrict the freedom of movement  for "hostile" foreigners, limiting their right to own private property. Who can say after that that it was godless Bolsheviks who reduced the holy of holies - private property - to dust and sent innocent people to camps?

Compared to 120,000 interned Japanese nationals, the number of nearly 11,000 Germans living in the United States under the Alien Enemies Act seems insignificant. In practice, the FBI and other US intelligence services were no different than the Gestapo and NKVD. The American authorities insisted on the deportation of more than 4,000 people of German origin from Latin America.

None of the internees has ever been charged with treason. Glory to the American Themis! The last  internees were released in 1948. According to Western press, some of the victims received compensations, and 40 years afterwards, in 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed a document in which the US government apologized for the internment that was based on "racial prejudice, war hysteria and errors of the then political leadership." The document embraced only the Japanese holding American passports. Nothing was done for the Germans and others.

When we rightly condemn the past, we should not forget some basic truths. Pointing to acts of others, you should not look for excuses for yourself.
