Malaysia deflects blame away from Russia for MH17 disaster

2018/05/31

Russia should not be considered guilty of shooting down Boeing aircraft Flight MH17 that crashed over Ukraine in 2014, Malaysia's Minister for Transport Anthony Loke told ChannelNews Asia.

Malaysian Boeing could be downed by Ukrainian fighter jets

"There is no convincing evidence to blame Russia on the basis of the data provided by the Joint Investigative Group (JIT). You can not simply take a finger and point it at Russia," he said, noting that all subsequent actions will be carried out only on the basis of body of evidence, taking into account diplomatic relations between the two countries.

On May 24, a special press conference of the JIT was held, at which it was said that a convoy of military vehicles left the base of the 53rd brigade near the city of Kursk. There were at least six Buk systems in the convoy, JIT experts said. One of those systems, marked as No. 332, was then sent to the territory of Ukraine. it was the system that subsequently shot down the passenger Boeing, the experts concluded.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Moscow will not recognize the results of the investigation until Russian experts receive full access to all materials of the case.

In 2015, Malaysia invited the UN Security Council to establish an international tribunal to identify those responsible for the Donbass air crash. Most of the member countries supported it, but Russia blocked the adoption of the document having used the right of veto.

Triumph of Western sanity: It was the Russians who sank the Titanic

2018/05/31

By Vasily Amirdzhanov

The plot of the British Skripal tale has made competition to the good old 007 saga. Even Joan Rowling's Harry Potter stories pale in comparison with the psychedelic tale about poisoners in Salisbury.

The chemical story has shaken fundamental science and raised a great deal of eyebrows in the scientific community. Yulia Skripal's video message spoken in a broken dialect of the Russian language has turned out to be deeply depressing.

In the first part of the Skripal case, everyone was amazed at the strength of the superhero, who could not be killed with the highly toxiс chemical agent. Now is the time to admire the courage of British medical specialists, who speak about the miraculous treatment of the Russian father and his daughter.

The fact that Salisbury doctors give confusing testimony and contradict each other in their statements does not matter for this heroic story.  After all, White Helmets were not too inventive in their artistic devices either. Yet, the general public is amazed; people continue to sympathise with the actors of the play. Faith does not require proof.

It is worth noting that the subject of French experts attracted to identify Novichok has not been completed yet. There was just a message, and it appears that the topic will not receive any further development.

The two-day controversy on the subject of the shot down Malaysian Boeing faded away as rapidly as it appeared, just like before. The Europeans do not seem to care that it goes about dozens and dozens of victims of the terrible disaster. EU officials simply wrote all those victims off, both the crew and the passengers, including many children.

Key objective data on the fatal flight, the records of Ukrainian flight controllers and flight missions of Ukrainian military pilots  - all that was replaced with alleged fingerprints of Russian servicemen found on the unexploded Buk missile (what?).

With all imagination in mind, it is difficult for me to imagine that Dutch experts could obtain fingerprints from a whole air defence brigade. To crown it all, those experts demonstrated fragments of different missiles to the general public, apparently in a fit of the triumph of sanity.

Indeed, one may assume against the background of all this that it was the Russians who sank the Titanic. Why haven't they arrested Leonardo DiCaprio yet? He is an American actor with Russian roots, he has met with Vladimir Putin under the guise of the need to save the Amur tiger - the connection with the Kremlin is obvious, is it not?

The Kremlin is also involved in all the mysterious crashes that have taken place in the Bermuda Triangle. Do you know why they call the Dead Sea "dead?" It's because it was the Russians who killed it.

Breaking news: Putin to hold secret meeting with China's Xi Jinping and DPRK's Kim Jong-un

2018/05/31

Journalist Vasily Golovnin published a sensational message in his Telegram channel. The message that has not been confirmed yet, though, says that a tripartite summit with the participation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping and the leader of the DPRK Kim Jong-un may take place on June 9 in the Chinese port of Qingdao.

According to Golovnin, he received the information from the Hong Kong-based organisation of Chinese dissidents - the Information Center of the Movement for Human Rights and Democratisation in China. The organisation is the unofficial mouthpiece of information about China and has a network of informants. However, official sources do not confirm the information yet.

The summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), chaired by Chinese President Xi Jinping, will be held on June 9-10 in Qingdao. Russian President Vladimir Putin is invited to the summit.

According to Golovnin, the appearance of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un at the meeting would become "an absolute sensation and a powerful political signal," which, in turn, would strengthen the position of the DPRK at the upcoming meeting in Singapore with US President Donald Trump.

Ukraine: A country of miracles, where people rise from the dead

2018/05/31

Representatives of the Security Bureau of Ukraine said that the information about the killing of Russian opposition journalist Arkady Babchenko in Kiev was part of the operation of the Ukrainian special services.

The operation, Ukrainian officials said, helped to capture the person, who initiated the upcoming attempted assassination.

On May 29, it became known that journalist Arkady Babchenko was shot in the back in his apartment building. It was reported that Babchenko died on the way to hospital. On May 30, however, he appeared alive at a news conference, at which he said that the special operation had been prepared two months in advance. "I was let into a month ago, and during this month I saw that the guys were working very hard, they were taking pains and plowing like buffaloes. We were in touch the whole month, we were thinking and working everything through. As a result, the special operation was conducted," Babchenko said.

As he added, he was supposed to be killed prior to the Champions League finals in Kiev. He also said that the price for his assassination was set at $40,000.

Official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, said that the staging of Babchenko's murder had a propaganda effect.

Chairman of the International Association of Veterans of Alfa anti-terror unit, Sergei Goncharov, said that Ukraine's operation was an "anachronism." Yet, member of the board of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, Anton Gerashchenko, believes that the Ukrainian security forces were guided by finest role models in their actions.

The head of the Council Committee on International Affairs of the Council of Federation, Konstantin Kosachev, said that the staging of the journalist's assassination should be attributed to "a string of delusional actions of the Ukrainian authorities against Russia."

The head of Reporters without Borders NGO Christophe Deloir called the situation part of the media war and expressed his deepest indignation in connection with the manipulations conducted by Ukrainian secret services."

Ukrainian security forces claim that Russian special services stand behind the operation to plot Babchenko's assassination. SBU representatives did not provide any evidence to prove their point, but said that the organiser "was talking about the need to eliminate 30 persons in Ukraine." No names were specified.

Many assumed that the whole operation to stage the journalist's death was bizarre. According to the version of the SBU, the Ukrainian special services knew who the organiser was (the "hand of the Kremlin"). Plus, the assassin had received $40,000 on his account. Consequently, the SBU had known the identity of the assassin long in advance. It was also said that the assassin had Babchenko's passport photo. Why would the killer need such a photo given that it was taken nearly 20 years ago? It is an open secret that people may look very different from their passport photos. SBU claims that as long as the assassin had Babchenko's passport photo, it means that the assassination was arranged by Russian special services. Yet, it is not only Russia that may have access to Babchenko's passport. Passport is not a matter of state secrecy. Babchenko, like any other Russian citizen, would very often hand his passport to commercial organisations, such as banks, travel agencies, visa centres, etc. To crown it all, Babchenko, apparently, had received residence permit in Ukraine, which means that the Ukrainian government has a copy of his passport.

US journalist Jill Dougherty noted that the fact that Babchenko is alive was obviously good news, but this fact also struck a huge blow to the reputation of Ukraine, because no one would ever trust what the Ukrainians say.

The silence of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko at the meeting with his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier looked particularly remarkable.

It is worthy of note that a number of Western leaders condemned the "killing" of the Russian journalist and implied in their comments that Russia was to blame again.

"The Skripal case was made before the presidential election in Russia. The case of Babchenko was fabricated on the eve of the World Cup in Russia. It is important for them to disrupt all political processes and develop the process of Russophobia instead," Russian Senator Franz Klintsevich said.

Traditionally, after the announcement of the news about the killing of Babchenko, the perpetrators were announced immediately - Russian special services. No investigation is required for such cases at all - they just point fingers at Russia and say it. The scenario was used in the UK, when Sergei and Yulia Skripal were said to have suffered from exposure to a highly toxic poison, from which they miraculously recovered within a very short period of time. A similar story was used in Syria, when the West masterminded the chemical attack in Eastern Ghouta. A number of victims of that attack soon rose from the dead and said that the attack was staged.

The Babchenko story is bizarre indeed. The journalist is alive, and all those, who have accused Russia of the crime seem to have made a blunder. So far, Western leaders have not released any new comments on the subject.

Assassination of journalist Arkady Babchenko was staged. He is alive

2018/05/30

Journalist Arkady Babchenko did not die. In the afternoon of May 30, Babchenko appeared before journalists at a press briefing of the Security Bureau of Ukraine (SBU). SBU officials also said that a person suspected of preparing the attempted assassination of the journalist was detained.

The organizer of the "assassination" of Russian opposition journalist Arkady Babchenko was detained in Kiev a few hours ago, the director of the SBU, Vasily Grytsak said at a press briefing on May 30.

"About three hours ago, we detained the organizer of this crime in the city of Kiev. The person is being interrogated, places of his residence and temporary stay are being searched," Gritsak said.

Earlier, Gritsak said that it was Russian special services that ordered the assassination of Russian opposition journalist Arkady Babchenko.

Gasoline prices in Russia: Free like a bird after elections

2018/05/30

Prices on gasoline in Russia are going crazy again. This is amazing: no matter how oil prices would fluctuate, prices on gasoline always rise for Russian customers. In May 2018, gasoline prices went up by one ruble in only one week. It's not the rules of the WTO or a market economy - someone just gave a go-ahead from the top: the elections are over, and now is the time for unpopular decisions.

On May 21-25, retail prices for gasoline AI-92 and AI-95 increased by seven percent in Russia.

Vadim Novikov, member of the expert council for the development of competition under the Government of the Russian Federation, told Pravda.Ru that the budget of the country takes advantage of high oil prices.

If oil prices grow, gasoline prices should go up again, and the government has no reason to interfere in this market situation, the expert said. "It is not only market sellers that compete, but also ordinary buyers. Accordingly, Russian buyers compete with foreign buyers. As practice shows, conditions of certain equivalence appear so that sellers could deal with all groups of buyers - everyone should give equivalent bids," Vadim Novikov told Pravda.Ru.

"Russia can close borders, and then the Russian market will never be linked with the foreign market, but then Russia will lose export revenues, which currently make the backbone of the Russian budget," the expert concluded.

Why not try and do that? Is there a market in Russia at all? Gasoline prices were rock stable prior to the presidential election. However, as soon as the new government was formed, the situation changed dramatically.

Before the elections, the volumes of oil products that would be sold at exchange made up 50-60 thousand tons daily. This volume would reduce the growth of wholesale prices and, accordingly, retail ones. Currently, they sell 10-12 thousand tons, which pushed wholesale prices up by 12 percent in a month and by 30 percent over the past week. It is hard to tell who gives a go-ahead for the change in sales, but there is someone, of course.

In other words, the Russian economy is a directive economy in the worst sense of the word, because it ensures political victories. Capitalists of a smaller rank take advantage of it too. The cost of gasoline should not greatly affect the growth of prices on food, electricity, etc., but it does - with a profit margin of 100-200 percent, which triggers inflation. The boomerang returns with, among other things, lower excises that go for road maintenance.

As a result, it is common people, common Russian taxpayers and customers, who pay for all this. They will have to work more to be able to retire and they will have to compensate for the price growth through a higher value added tax. Is the new old government going to do anything about it?

Russian FM says what kind of politics Moscow would like to see from Washington

2018/05/30

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov spoke about what Russia would like to see in Washington's foreign policies. According to Lavrov, it would be nice if the United States of America were more predictable in its actions

"Yes, it would probably be better to have more predictable views on US foreign policy, but reality is a reality," Sergei Lavrov said.

Lavrov added that Russia must conduct a dialogue both with Washington and Trump in particular even though USA's actions are unpredictable.

"We are dealing with the leader who was elected by the people of the world's largest power, and with all the unpredictability and the zigzagging nature of the line of politics that Washington is running, we have to work with it. We are open to it," the Russian Foreign Minister said.

Germany tells Ukraine not to mess with Nord Stream 2

2018/05/30

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier stated that Ukraine should stop criticising Germany's participation in the Nord Stream-2 project.

At a press briefing in Kiev, Steinmeier tried to explain that "we are also talking about the future and security of Ukraine." "You saw that Germany is making efforts to ensure the transit of gas through Ukraine," he said.

According to the German president, Ukraine's fears of losing its status as a gas transit country have no real basis.

Nord Stream-2 stipulates for the construction of gas pipelines with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year. Earlier, the United States said that the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline would undermine Ukraine's energy independence. However, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that Germany regarded the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline as an economic project that was safe for Europe.

Russian journalist shot dead in Kiev. Ukraine immediately blames Russia

2018/05/30

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the statements from the Ukrainian authorities about Russia's involvement in the assassination of journalist Arkady Babchenko in Kiev were a "sad fashion."

Ukrainian Prime Minister Vladimir Groisman stated that Russia could be involved in the crime, even before the investigation began, Lavrov said.

"This fashion, set by the authors of this kind of international affairs, is very sad," Lavrov said. "But, as you can see, many people pick it up, especially those who, like our Ukrainian neighbours, enjoy total impunity owing to their Western curators," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

Lavrov said that the assassination of Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko in Kiev was a tragedy.

The Russian Foreign Ministry demanded the Ukrainian authorities should make every effort to promptly investigate the assassination. "The level of physical violence, assassinations of media employees in this state [Ukraine] has been growing steadily, and their investigations do not lead to the punishment of criminals," a statement from the ministry said. The Foreign Ministry also brought condolences to Babchenko's relatives.

Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko, who lived in Ukraine, was shot dead in his apartment building in Kiev on the evening of May 29. His wife called the ambulance, but the man died on the way to hospital.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Groisman assumed that Moscow could stand behind the journalist's assassination, because the "Russian totalitarian machine" could not forgive the journalist his political views. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavel Klimkin also assumed that the hand of the Kremlin could be involved in the crime.

Groisman said that Arkady Babchenko was vehemently opposed to Russia's stance as far as the crisis in Ukraine was concerned. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavel Klimkin said at the meeting of the UN Security Council in New York on May 29 the following: "It's too early to say who is behind this, but our understanding of similar cases makes us believe that Russia is using other types of tactics to destabilise Ukraine, in particular, carries out terrorist attacks, conducts subversive activities and political murders," Klimkin said. He recalled that Babchenko was forced to leave Russia because of the threats that he had received. "He continued fighting for democratic Russia, for Ukraine, and, of course, Moscow always regarded him as an enemy," Klimkin said.

Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko was killed in the apartment building where he lived in Kiev on the evening of May 29. The assassin followed him inside and shot him three times in the back.

Will Putin's policy of concession succeed?

2018/05/29

By Paul Craig Roberts

Russian President Vladimir Putin's speech at the St. Petersburg International Economic Conference last weekend shows the Russian government's ensnarement by neoliberal economic policy.  Putin defended globalism and free trade, and he warned that crisis will result from the breakup of the global system.

In fact, crisis is the result of globalism and neoliberal economics.  For Russia neoliberal economics means both economic and political crisis.

Neoliberal economics produces domestic economic crisis, because it diverts employment in high-productivity, high-value added activities, such as manufacturing and tradeable professional skills such as software engineering, from developed economies, such as the US, UK, and Europe, to economies where wages are much lower.  Neoliberal economics is also the basis for financialization, which diverts the economic surplus from real investment into debt service.  Together these devastating impacts of neoliberal economics kill economic growth.

Just look at the no-growth experience of the Western world in the 21st century, where growth has been limited to the prices of financial assets while well-paid employment disappears.

The problem is not only that neoliberal economics is a device for financialization and the ruination of populations for the benefit of oligarchs and global corporations.  The larger problem is that The Russian government's belief in neoliberal economics makes Russia impotent to withstand pressure from Washington.

Russia cannot stand up to Washington or even to Israel, because the government  believes that Russia's economic success depends upon being integrated into the Western economic system.  To keep the door open, Russia continually accepts  provocations which encourages more provocations.

There are situations in which this is statesmanlike and commendable, but not this situation because the crisis goes beyond economics. Putin's prudent diplomacy is perceived in Washington as weakness. The neoconservatives who control the US government are committed to US hegemony.  They are already over-filled with hubris.  Each time they witness Putin back away, they become more confident that they can with more pressure force Russia into submission.

For example, the neoconservatives read Putin's standdown in the face of Trump's missile attack on Syria, an attack based on an obvious fake news event, as a lack of nerve.  Putin's acceptance  of Washington's attack was very damaging to Russia's credibility with Washington's neoconservatives. What they saw was Putin accepting an attack on an ally to whose defense  Russia had committed armed forces.  What is the point of clearing Syria of American supported jihadists and then allowing Washington and Israel to attack Syria?

I have explained Putin's standdown as his gamble that Washington's aggression could break apart Washington's European empire as long as Russia does not exercise force in a way that would scare the Europeans.  In other words, Putin is behaving carefully, not rashly. This is admirable, especially as Putin has superweapons against which the West has no defense.

My concern is what happens if Putin's bet doesn't pay off, and the effect of Putin's restraint is to convince the neoconservatives that Russia can be bullied into submission.  I do not think Russia can be bullied into submission, but the neoconservatives will have Russia in a corner where Russia has to fight or surrender.  Russia will fight, and it will be the end of us all.

In other words, if Putin's admirable strategy fails, the neoconservatives, who are already more full of hubris than was Hitler when he sent the Wehrmacht marching off into Russia, will push Russia to the point of war.

Therefore, I have suggested a different strategy:  that Putin put his foot down.  For example, he could stop accommodating US and Israeli attacks on Syria.  These attacks are illegal under international law.  They are the actions of war criminals under the Nuremberg Standard established by the US itself. Putin could supply Syria with the S-300 missile defense system, but at the request of Washington and Israel Putin has not fulfilled the contract, another example to the neoconservatives of Putin's lack of nerve, a misreading that encourages Washington in its provocations.

A foot-down strategy carries the risk of scaring the Europeans about Russian aggressiveness, which is the way the presstitute Western media would report it.  However, this strategy does not carry the risk of convincing hubristic neoconservatives that Putin is a pussy. The effect on Washington could be positive and push Washington back to the time when the US was respectful of the Soviet Union. The effect on Europe could be to make Europe aware that the conflict that Washington is initiating is what threatens Europe, not a threat from Russia.

The evidence is clear that the neoconservatives are discounting Russia as nothing more than a short-term obstacle to US world hegemony.  Let's attempt to weigh some of the evidence in behalf of Putin's diplomatic stategy.  French President Macron, Washington's puppet, who has French troops in the US-occupied part of Syria, is toasted by RT for going to the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum with the mission of "keeping Russia in the European family."

Is Macron, who has French troops in Washington-occupied Syria, breaking with Washington, or is Macron playing Putin along by encouraging Putin in his belief that Europe will break from Washington and welcome Russia into the "common European home," thus encouraging more concessions from Putin.

Is the Russian government being deluded into making more concessions and accepting more requests that serve the agenda of Washington and Israel instead of Russia and her allies? Washington's latest request is that Putin encourage Iran to withdraw its military contingents from Syria. Putin did as requesed, but Iran refused on the grounds that, unlike the US, France, and Washington's mercenary jihadists, Iran is in Syria at Syria's requests. The result is that Washington and Israel, both of which continue to attack Syria, have succeeded in creating tensions between Russia and Iran.

To avoid a rift with a necessary ally, Putin might instead have told Washington that Russia and Iran would withdraw after Washington removes the forces it has placed in Syria. Washington was quick to take advantage of the rift and has informed Putin that Washington does not approve of Russia fulfilling the contract to deliver jet fighters and the S-300 air defense system to Iran.  If Putin accommodates this Washington request as well, it will make it much easier for the US and Israel to attack Iran.

Washington has won again.  Dispute between Russia and Iran leaves Iran more vulnerable to a US military attack, an attack that a number of commentators see in the works.  If Iran is destabilized, the easier to destabilize Russia.

What did Putin get out of again acquiescing to Washington?  More threats to Syria from Washington and Israel. On May 28 Washington informed the Syrian government that if it attempts to clear Daraa of foreign invaders who are occupying, with Washington's support, Syrian territory, Syria will receive a "firm response" from Washington

Israel informed Syriathat Syria is not permitted to use its air defenses to protect its territory against Israeli aircraft operating within Syrian territory.  In other words, Washington and Israel have rewarded Putin's concession by forbidding Syria to defend itself.

The neoconservative Washington regime is confident that it has Putin locked into the backdown mode and will even be able to negotiate Russia's withdrawal from Syria.  If that occurs, Washington will restart the war to overthrow the Syrian government.

With Russia on the run, Putin can expect a Washington-ordered Ukrainian attack on the breakaway Russian republics that Russia has left hanging and also Washington-organized ISIS attacks on Russia*through the former Soviet central Asian republics. The Ukrainian attack could occur during the World Cup when the Russian government will be focused on the prestige of hosting the World Cup and not on its foreign policy.

When Russia is incorporated into the Western economy, it will be as a vassal state.
But for now Russia is celebrating, pointing to the large attendance at the St Petersburg Forum, including that of the French president, as evidence that Russia is not isolated and is hoping for another prestige gain from the World Cup.

Perhaps someone in the Russian government will remember that it was its focus on the Sochi Olympics that delivered Ukraine into Washington's hands.

Man who destroyed Repin's masterpiece at Tretyakov Gallery pleased with his attack

2018/05/29

A Moscow court chose a preventive punishment for Igor Podporin, who attacked and damaged world-famous painting by Ilya Repin "Ivan the Terrible and his son Ivan" (also known as "Ivan the Terrible killing his son") at the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.

It is worthy of note that Repin's painting was not insured.

The accused will remain in custody until July 26. He faces up to six years in prison, as well as a fine of up to six million rubles.

The defense requested home arrest for Podporin, since he pleaded guilty and stated that he was not going to hide from the investigation. However, the prosecutor's arguments proved more convincing.

"Podporin's actions aroused wide public condemnation and popular protest," the prosecutor's spokesman said.

It was also reported that Podporin was brought to justice for hooliganism when he lived in Uzbekistan.

On Friday, May 25,  at 8:55 p.m. shortly before the Tretyakov Gallery was going to close, Podporin broke into the already empty hall, grabbed a metal railing and struck Ilya Repin's glazed painting "Ivan the Terrible and his son Ivan" several times leaving deep scratches on the canvas. The man was detained, a criminal case was brought against him. The perpetrator said that he caused damage to the painting because the historical facts displayed on it were wrongful.

The painting was seriously damaged. The canvas was torn in three places in the central part on the figure of the prince. Pieces of broken glass also damaged the antique art frame. The most valuable part of the picture - images of the faces and hands of the Tsar and the Tsarevich - remained intact.

According to rough estimates, the first stage of restoration works may cost up to ten million rubles.

Over a hundred years ago, a vandal attacked the same painting too. In 1913, icon painter and Old Believer Abram Balashov struck the canvas with a knife three times.

Syria towards the final victory

2018/05/29

There is an air of victory in Syria, after the liberation by the government troops of the areas controlled by the Islamic State and by the rebels in the south of Damascus. According to what Syrian religious sources tall to Gli occhi della guerra, they are organized to think about the country's future at the end of the conflict. It is the sign that something has changed and that one begins to think of a tomorrow of peace.

by Matteo Carnieletto

"We have a sense of joy, facing the future. But I wonder: a country, when it lives a war, is helped by various humanitarian organizations. Why does no one help the Syrian people? Why do not they organize initiatives for the rehabilitation of those who have been traumatized by the war?" sister Yola asks, from the memorial of St. Paul.

"We have not been helped - continues the religious - by any foreign organization. On the front line there are our young people, our volunteers, who take care of the psychological, educational and health support to the population". "We ourselves - sister Yola tells us - want to start over. And it is typical of the Syrian people."

Yesterday, civilians and government troops marched to al-Hajar al-Aswad, a suburb south of Damascus recently ripped off by the jihadists. The images released by the agencies show the youth of the Baath party, to which President Bashar belongs to Assad, parading among the destroyed houses, playing and marching.

The images are very evocative and recall, albeit on a smaller scale, the great concert organized by Russia after the taking of Palmira.

Syrian soldiers, on the other hand, show the national flag, often accompanied by the Palestinian flag.

According to reports by Al Masdar, 124 improvised devices left by ISIS in the districts of the Yarmouk refugee camp would have been found. Not a novelty: before leaving Mosul and Raqqa, in fact, the jihadists had "trapped" their cities to be able to make the most deaths even after they left.

Major General Yuri Yevtushenko, head of Syria's Reconciliation Center, said: "The engineering units are continuing to dismantle parts of the former Palestinian refugee camp in Yarmouk."

But the Syrians are not trying to move forward only in the south. After the release of Aleppo in December 2016, a major campaign was launched to rebuild the city, as Nour, 24 years old, explains: "Life is coming back. We are assisting people who own houses and markets to return to the old part of the city. Now there are many luxury shops and restaurants. And life flows normal in this area."

This great work of reconstruction was made possible thanks to the intervention of the government, as Nour explains to Gli occhi della guerra: "They brought back electricity, water and the streets are finally illuminated and the roads are paved. They are working day and night."

The road to peace is still long. But Syria seems to want to travel to the end.

Putin grants Russian citizenship to US athlete Jeffrey Monson

2018/05/29

Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a decree of May 28 granting Russian citizenship to American athlete Jeffrey Monson. The athlete himself considers himself a Russian since 2015.

In 2014, Monson stated that he had applied for Russian citizenship. In late 2015, the fighter claimed that he had already received a Russian passport. However, the Kremlin asked not to put the horse before the cart.

"First of all, I want to note one thing - he will have to take the oath. Then, it will be considered that he has received citizenship," Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

The athlete has several tattoos with symbols of Russia on his body. Among them, there are words "freedom" and "solidarity", the sickle and hammer imprint on the left shin, a red and black star on the chest, as well as an image of "Motherland" monument on the left leg. It was said that the athlete was going to join the Communist Party.

Reportedly, Monson dreams of organizing a bear farm in Siberia. He also wants to train young Russian athletes.

Jeffrey William Monson was born and raised in Minnesota, USA. Performing in mixed martial arts, Monson, nicknamed The Snowman, has had 85 fights and won 60 of them. He is also the world champion in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Russia will not pay any compensations to victims of MH17 crash - Foreign Minister Lavrov

2018/05/29

The approach of Australia and the Netherlands about the need for Russia to pay compensations to families of the victims of Flight MH17 disaster over Ukraine is inappropriate.

Noting that the investigation into the air crash still continues, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said: "They now claim that already at this stage, Russia is supposed to enter into negotiations with Australia and the Netherlands about the amount of compensations to be paid. This logic is identical to that of the so-called Skripal case, when it was said that most likely, it was the Russians, who poisoned them."

"Therefore, they want us to plead guilty while they will continue the investigation," the minister said adding that the case looks like an attempt to play on Russophobia and divert public attention.

Lavrov reminded that Russia repeatedly provided international investigators with documentary evidence of the crash of MH17, but they were ignored. The information that the Russian side provided included primary data from Russian radars, according to which "the missile could not be launched from the site indicated by investigators. "All that was ignored," Lavrov said.

On May 25, the Netherlands and Australia officially announced Russia responsible for the crash of MH17. "We will seek compensations for the atrocities caused by such behavior," Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said on ABC News the same day. The day before, JIT experts said that the passenger aircraft of Malaysia Airlines was shot down with a missile launched from a Buk system that had been delivered to the Donbass from a Russian military unit near Kursk.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, commenting on the new charges, said: "There is nothing that would make us believe the final conclusions, and it will never happen unless we fully participate in the investigation."

Boeing 777 passenger plane of Malaysia Airlines was shot down on June 17, 2014 in the sky above the Donetsk region. All 298 people on board - citizens of ten different countries - were killed.

Russia sells S-400 air defense systems to India for $6 billion

2018/05/29

Russia plans to ship several regimental sets of S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems to India. The deal is evaluated at about $6 billion, sources at the Russian Ministry of Defense told RBC.

"It goes about five regiments, which is ten divisions," the source said.

India may thus receive "four regimental S-400 sets and a mixed-strength regiment complete with ammunition and spare parts," a source at the Defense Ministry said. On Monday, the parties signed a memorandum of intent. The cost of the entire contract will make up $6.2 billion, RBC said.

An Indian source familiar with the course of negotiations said that the coordination of the S-400 deal goes through the final stage. The only "stumbling block" for the deal is the risk for India to fall under US sanctions in connection with the federal law from 2017 "On Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act." (CAATSA). In accordance with the law, the USA may impose sanctions on the countries that enter into large-scale contract with Russian defense industry companies.

Most likely, Russia and India will announce the deal prior to the summit of the leaders of the two countries in October of this year.

Meanwhile, Mac Thornberry, the Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, said that the US was disappointed that India concluded a contract with Russia for the delivery of S-400 Triumph air defense missile systems. However, he added, sanctions on India are unlikely to follow. At the same time, the purchase of Russian missile defense systems would complicate India's access to US military technologies, such as, for example, to Predator drone, the official added.

Billionaire Roman Abramovich obtains Israeli citizenship, becomes Israel's wealthiest man instantly

2018/05/28

Billionaire Roman Abramovich has received the passport of the State of Israel, Ynetnews website reports without indicating the source of information. Abramovich's private plane landed in Tel-Aviv's Ben Gurion airport on May 28, the website said.

According to the website, the Russian billionaire, who earlier served as the Governor of the Chukotka region, received all necessary documents and opened a bank account in Israel. It is believed that Roman Abramovich, as an Israeli citizen, has thus become the wealthiest national of the country. The billionaire will live in the house that he purchased for 100 million shekels in Neve Tzedek neighbourhood located in southwestern Tel Aviv.

In May 2018, it was reported that Roman Abramovich had difficulties with obtaining a new British visa. He was forced to leave the UK. Mr. Abramovich missed the FA Cup final between Chelsea and Manchester United.

Sources at Abramovich's circles said that the British authorities had not denied him a visa, but the process of reviewing his documents was taking too long.

Roman Abramovich had a British investment visa, which a person receives in exchange for investment in the UK economy worth at least two million pounds sterling. In March 2018, the British authorities promised to investigate into system of those visas - in particular, into circumstances of their issuance for Russian citizens.

Italy: At the mercy of the Stranger

2018/05/28

Never as in these moments come to mind the words of Dante, when he referred to the Italian land as "Ahi servant Italy, grief hostel, ship without coachman in a storm, not a woman of the provinces, but brothel!". Anyone who has placed hopes on the future of our homeland after the April 4 elections, has realized how vain they were on Sunday 27 May. After two months of difficult negotiations, the 5 Stars Movement and the Northern League of Matteo Salvini had reached an agreement to form the new government. They also wrote the list of ministers who could take office the following Monday to start working and, in their ideas, correct some of the distortions in our country.

But no. The interpretation of the Constitution made his own by the president of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, has meant that the agreement failed, officially on the name of Paolo Savona, chosen as future minister of the economy. Paolo Savona has always been a man of establishment, holding prestigious positions in the Italian system. He is a university professor of economics who has participated in the drafting of the European treaties: he knows them well, having seen them born. Above all, he is perfectly reminiscent of how the Italian economy was at the time of the old currency, before the Euro. To his shame he was accused of having criticized just... Euro and Europe, as they are today. Savona wanted to sit down at a table with the Germans, the French and the other beautiful souls of northern Europe and re-discuss the treaties, correcting the worst to get the best. An ambitious program and perhaps a little naive, given the pitiless with which he would have to confront himself. Has Greece taught anything to anyone? However, President Mattarella refused the name of Sergio Savona and this precipitated the situation. He could not do it, according to some, or he could, according to others. The Italian Constitution sometimes seems to be only a smoky and arbitrary exercise of interpretations.

In the previous days, Italy has been treated in an ignoble way by the international press: we Italians have even been called "scroungers" by the German newspapers. The intelligence services of Germany would have been alerted about Italian choices. The spread on our bonds began to rise, as it was obvious to expect. Even some English newspapers, which have not yet digested the Brexit, thrown fuel on the fire. The great Italian press has kept faith with its consolidated nature as a servant of the regime, criticizing again the choices of Italian voters, even defining them as "plebeians" and without paying attention to defend that homeland from which receives substantial funding, paid with the taxes of the Italians who work.

Both the 5 Star Movement and the Northern League reacted angrily to Mattarella's choice, accusing him of being prone to foreign interests and forgetting Italian ones. In particular, Luigi Di Maio of the 5 Stars spoke of impeachment against President Mattarella accusing him of a blatant violation of Article 92 of the Italian Constitution. However, I fear that this road is very uphill, like that towards new elections.

This is Italy now. You can not criticize the Euro and the European Union otherwise the "markets" jump on you and keep you from having government and ministers, even if there are numbers to have them and the people voted for them. Mattarella immediately proposed Mr. Carlo Cottarelli as a possible Prime Minister and I would not be surprised if the list of ministers was already ready. He is another expert in economics (sic!), but very welcome to international finance. I wonder which politician in our Parliament will have the courage to vote for Mr. Cottarelli. It would be a political suicide because there will be no majority to form an alternative government to that of League-5Stars.

Italy is not a German colony. We must not and can not account for our actions in London, Berlin, Brussels and in every criminal economic club that oppresses people and fattens the banks. For too long we have accepted abuses by Merkel and her puppet Juncker. It is a German problem if Deutsche Bank is a debt bomb ready to fail. It is not up to the Italian people to save it, certainly not being reduced to hunger to satisfy the German bankers. For too long, however, we have allowed others, from outside, to decide the Prime Ministers of the Italian government through a continuous and ruthless interference in our internal affairs. The more we gave up, the more they ask. But submitting is a pathological defect that must be fought and not exalted. Tsipras has betrayed his people, condemning Greece to stagnation, hunger and misery. Betrayed by its highest vertices, Greece is now prone, with its back almost broken: the cradle of Philosophy would need a new Pericles, but there is none on the horizon.

Here, the mayor of Rome, Mrs. Virginia Raggi, has the clean face of good people. She put her hands to a difficult situation, in some ways a true can of worms and began to remedy to the way of doing politics of those who preceded her. Imagine a national government of like-minded people. We do not ask them to be perfect, free from errors and faults. We ask them to love Italy truely because true love brings with it, of course, clear obligations and imperatives. The old Italian political class is therefore not alone and simply frightened by the new advancing: it is terrified by it. It is afraid of ending up in jail first, swept away by new judicial inquiries, then going to History like that bunch of pigs who treated their country as a manger to binge, while they sold it out to the Stranger.

Italy must be different. Italy must have a destiny different from being at the mercy of the Stranger. So I ask to the Italian readers, my compatriots, everyone, even those in uniform, I ask them too: are not you tired of this filth? Do you not have enough of how we are treated and how we are betrayed? Are you not tired of the nothing that we are becoming day after day and that is exactly the opposite of what we were, of what we could be?

Putin turns Crimea and Kaliningrad into two unassailable fortresses

2018/05/28

Europe and the United States are concerned about Russia's recent actions to strengthen its borders.

German publication the Focus states that the Russian authorities continue their efforts to enhance the defence of the Crimea after the region returned to the Russian Federation. Russia has been turning the Crimean Peninsula into an "impregnable fortress," the publication said.

The Vyshniy Volochek small missile ship equipped with Caliber missiles arrived on the peninsula. There are also two divisions of S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems on the Crimea, along with coastal artillery systems, whereas the fleet received several new frigates and submarines.

The head of the Committee on Defence and Security of the Council of Federation, Viktor Bondarev, earlier explained such moves with NATO's growing activities in the Black Sea and the excessive attention that the alliance has been paying to the peninsula lately.

According to him, S-400 Triumf and Pantsir-S complexes make the Black Sea region completely protected from a potential enemy.

Russia has been conducting similar activities in her westernmost region - the Kaliningrad enclave. Italian publication Il Giornale admitted that the Kaliningrad region has powerful defence even though the region is isolated from Russia's main territory. The powerful defence system that the region has may create a no-fly zone above a third of Poland's territory.

The deployment of three fully-equipped elite brigades in Kaliningrad, the deployment of state-of-the-art military technologies (S-400 Triumf and Iskander-M missile complexes), caused the commander of the US Air Force in Europe, General Frank Gorenc, call the situation "extremely dangerous."

Thus, the regions that used to be considered weak owing to their geographical peculiarities, have been strengthened highly reliably owing to the new Russian strategy.

US warships tickle China's nerves in the Pacific

2018/05/28

The United States intends to continue naval operations in the Pacific region, Christopher Logan, an official spokesman for the US Department of Defence said.

According to him, US Navy ships conduct operations in the Pacific region on a regular basis in accordance with international law and demonstrate the ability to move around at sea and carry out sorties.

At the same time, Chinese officials said that two ships of the US Navy made a serious violation of sovereignty as they passed in the area of the Paracel Islands area in the South China Sea on May 27.

China has had a dispute with a number of countries in the Asia-Pacific region about the territorial affiliation of several islands in the South China Sea. The Paracel Islands are claimed by Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines and Taiwan.

Chinese officials stated that the actions of American seamen came as "a serious infringement of China's sovereignty" and a violation of international norms. The People's Republic of China takes steps to restrict navigation of other countries in the disputed area. The American ships were only 19 kilometres from the Paracel Islands.

Turkey swaps USA's F-35 for Russia's Su-57

2018/05/28

Ankara plans to buy Russian Su-57 fighters instead of American F-35 fighter aircraft, Yeni Safak said with reference to sources.

Russia's Sukhoi fifth-generation fighter aircraft in the sky su-57

Turkey does not plan to refuse from its June purchase. The acquisition of Russian fighter aircraft comes as a backup option that the country will resort to if Washington refuses to sell F-35 to Ankara. US officials announced such a probability after Turkey bought S-400 anti-aircraft from Russia.

Washington and NATO voiced their non-acceptance of the situation with Turkey's decision to purchase weapons from the Russian Federation. Assistant Secretary of State Wess Mitchell said that the acquisition of S-400 system would deprive the Turkish military of F-35 fighters. Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu stated that Turkey would take adequate measures in response should the US make its threat real.

Russia ruined Ukraine's plan to sell Tu-160 strategic bombers to China

2018/05/28

Chinese experts said that China still does not have intercontinental strategic bombers in service. To date, the Chinese Air Force is armed with Xian H-6K (variant of Tu-16) strategic bombers, designed to deliver nuclear munitions. Yet, China regrets the failed deal to deliver Tu-160 aircraft.

Russia creates new Tu-160 hypersonic passenger airliner

Beijing Times wrote that China was about to sign the deal to acquire strategic Tu-160 bombers during the late 1990s, but the US and Russia did not let the deal materialise.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Ukraine inherited 19 new strategic Tu-160 bombers, but was expecting to sell them being unable to exploit the aircraft.

Russia did not want China to obtain the aircraft. In 1999, Ukraine had to return eight Tu-160 strategic bombers to be able to pay debt for shipments of Russian natural gas.

In addition, the United States and the European Union signed an agreement with the new Ukrainian government to destroy strategic weapons that Ukraine inherited from the Soviet Union. The United States provided Ukraine $15 million for the purpose. As a result, China failed to buy Tu-160 bombers from Ukraine.

China had to prepare its own base for the construction of new intercontinental strategic bombers equipped with nuclear and conventional weapons, the publication wrote. At the same time, Tu-160 could have improved China's defence capability a lot easier and cheaper.

USA trains Syrian militants to kill Russians in Syria

2018/05/28

Experts of the Russian Defence Ministry study the version of the involvement of Free Syrian Army fighters in the attack on the Russian military. It was said that the fighters of the Free Syrian Army were trained at a US base in Syria.

Paul Craig Roberts about war in Syria and World War III — Part I

Earlier, a group of fighters of the Free Syrian Army allegedly went to the Deir-ez-Zor region to provide assistance to Kurdish formations. They are based in At-Tanf in the province of Homs. The base was established by US special services in 2014. The Russian Ministry of Defence believes that the US-led coalition provides military training for representatives of the "moderate opposition" in Syria.

At the US base, radical fighters are also trained to struggle against the army of Syrian President  Bashar Assad. An armed classо with them took place last week. About ten Russian professional soldiers of the 200th artillery brigade of the Eastern Military District took part in the skirmish. They were supposed to coordinate actions of the Syrian troops.

On May 23, Syrian military groups were being stowed, when the militants attacked. The Russian military repulsed the attack by taking on the command. The russian deployed artillery weapons and opened fire within the shortest period of time possible.

As a result, 43 militants were killed, six vehicles were destroyed. Officials with the Russian Defence Ministry confirmed the death of four Russian military men in Syria and the wounding of three others.

In February, it was reported that the United States destroyed a large group of Russian mercenaries in Syria. The number of victims still remains unknown and varies from four to dozens.

What would you do if you were Kim Jong-un?

2018/05/27

What would you do if you were Kim Jong-un?

The big option facing Kim Jong-un, Leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, is whether or not he can trust the West. Is the USA good for its word?

In studying topics such as the North Korea issue, one has to see the big picture. And that inevitably revolves around the e-word, economics. And this is where the heart of Washington, the champion of the market-oriented economy, pulsates. The policy of Washington is not dictated by the President of the United States of America, it is dictated by the $inister $ix $isters, or the BARFFS lobbies (Banking, Arms, eneRgy, Finance, Food, pharmaceuticalS and drugS) which in turn shape the policies of the FUKUS Axis (France-UK-US) and the ASS (Anglo-Saxon Syndicate). NATO is involved.

So with their collective multi-billion-dollar budget, the mountainous Democratic People's Republic of Korea matters not to them because with sanctions any successes of the economic and social model can be pushed to breaking point and rendered spineless and limited in the extreme.

What matters is the geographical position of North Korea, a buffer State between the People's Republic of China and the US ally, South Korea, which decided to climb into bed with its colonial master, Japan, after the War and embrace the Capitalist way of life with its trillions of dollars. For a few. And for the rest endemic unemployment, homelessness, hunger, suicide, desperation, a daily struggle to survive and bring up a family.

So it is good for China to have this buffer State on its eastern flank, while Washington covets North Korea as a means of setting up a staging post for the cultural, social and economic invasion of The Middle Kingdom (the name the Chinese give to their country). And for the DPR Korea, which has read the Libya Lesson, the only guarantee you have against a bully is a big brother with a large fist. Ka-BOOM!

For those who snort the word "nonsense!" in derision, let us remember the good old days when the Soviet Union and its allies held the USA and its allies in check. You could step off an aircraft anywhere in the world, take the magic bus from London to Istanbul, then across Iran and into Afghanistan. You could go hiking in the mountains of Pakistan, you could do the North-South Africa route from Tangiers to Cape Town, you could do the West-East route across Africa from Atlantic to Indian Oceans, you could go across North Africa from Morocco to Egypt.

All you needed was the financing to get there and mostly you could live off the charity of the people who received you, with smiles, stories, shared cultures. That was the world I grew up in and it was a wonderful place to be. We looked forward to a multi-cultural peaceful co-existence of shared resources, friendship and love, happiness, development. People did not want to cut your head off, they would kill the only goat in the village to honor you with a feast.

And then what happened? The leaders of the Soviet bloc countries listened to the Siren's Song. "We'll help you!" they crooned with the water-flow of the harps in the background. "No of course we will not encroach NATO eastwards!" and to Gaddafy "OK you get rid of your weapons of mass destruction and we will embrace you. We'll also release the man accused of the Lockerbie bombing. Smiles".

BULLSHIT! NATO encroached eastwards then told Moscow it was none of its business, the ASS (see above) invaded Iraq and used military hardware against civilian structures, massacring the population and stealing the country's resources, then the FUKUS (see above) set up a base camp in Benghazi and orchestrated the transformation of Libya, now defenseless, from the country with the highest Human Development Index in Africa to a failed and fractured State crawling with terrorists, with three governments. Nice one, what spectacular foreign policy. Tell Cameron, Sarkozy and that Obama to take a trip to Libya today and see what they have done. They should hang their heads in shame. Then the interference using terrorists, again, in Syria.

So forgive Kim Jung-un for looking on and thinking "Blimey!"

Today you cannot get off an airplane in most of the destinations I mentioned above and cannot perform any of the routes without taking a high risk. Fortress Europe has adopted a policy of "send the bastards back" and half the world regards the other half with hatred, disrespect, suspicion and derision. Education has become a business, so the "haves" have and the "have-nots" have not (try and get an MBA or a Master's course), getting a job has become a question of pulling strings, keeping it almost impossible, getting a home revolves around showing the cap to your extended family and network of friends, cousins you have seen once, godparents, great-aunts, grandparents, the odd reclusive uncle who breaks wind and giggles at family gatherings then you lose it because your company folds and the State offers you the middle finger in return. Healthcare is already a business and most people are on one form of medication or another, not to cure them but to provide a rent to the Pharmaceuticals/drugs lobby. You didn't actually believe that you would ever get off the medication, did you? For those who choose to rent, the market economy takes over and pushes the prices up to where the market can reach, so in tourist destinations, the young generation is screwed. They try to emigrate. Then they send the "bastards" back.

Whatever happened to that world of shared stories, cultures, religions, gastronomy, those shared smiles, meals, travels, those wonderful evenings sitting outside drinking beer or juice or water or nothing just listening to songs and sounds and drinking up the spirit of the occasion, young people from around the world coming together and learning together, dreaming of shared futures, peace and inter-exchange of ideas, ideals and resources? They have killed our dream.

As I wrote in my letter to Secretary Brezhnev when I was twelve years old and predicted this shit was going to happen, the West has a lot to answer for. This unacceptable state of events came about when the alternative economic and social model decided to dissolve itself after hearing the Siren's song.

So if you were Kim Jong-un, would YOU listen to the siren's song?

How low will America go?

2018/05/26

One of the slogans hyperbolized by the racist, narcissistic, venal, inept, sociopathic, demagogic fraud who now occupies the White House is "Make America Great Again."  One question this slogan fails to answer is "For Who?"

I'm certain that the southern plantation owners who made fortunes through the use of forced, unpaid labor thought America was pretty great.  But the slaves, not so much.  I'm certain that the people who profited from the violation of treaties, displacement of populations, and massacres to steal land and resources thought America was pretty great.  But Native-Americans, not so much.  I'm certain the robber barons who enriched themselves by forcing people to work long hours, under arduous conditions, for substandard wages thought America was pretty great.  But the workers, not so much.  And I'm certain that Rutherford B. Hayes thought America was pretty great when he stole the presidency by agreeing to condemn African-Americans to second-class citizenship.  But the millions who suffered under the yoke of segregation, discrimination, humiliation, and lynching, not so much.

I mention Hayes because, within a twelve-year period during the late 1800s, both he and Benjamin Harrison became presidents even though they lost the popular vote.

This history was recently repeated when, within a sixteen-year period beginning at the dawn of the new millennium, George W. Bush and Donald Trump (two of the worst presidents in the history of the United States) also obtained their offices despite losing the popular vote.

This calamitous déjà vu has harbingered the decline of America, corrupted every branch of government, and permitted evil to profit on a global scale.  It has also demonstrated the abject failure of the "Electoral College" to fulfill the purpose it was originally created for, which was to keep inept, venal, and/or soulless people from occupying the highest office in the land.

After the attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center in September 2001, Bush instituted policies of illegal spying, abuse of the "material witness" statute, incommunicado imprisonment without charge or trial, kidnapping, torture (even of American citizens), and extrajudicial executions, much of it perpetrated by the CIA.  These policies were largely instigated by the so-called "Torture Memos" created by two Department of Justice (DOJ) lawyers, John Yoo and Jay Bybee.

Although some of these policies eventually fell into disfavor, the CIA torturers and murderers who carried them out, and the people who enabled them, were never criminally punished.  In fact, every duplicitous machination was used to protect them.  Prosecutors routinely refused to bring charges, and when torture victims attempted to acquire some compensation through civil lawsuits, cowardly and/or unethical judges cited every specious excuse in the book-even pretending they didn't know what constituted torture-to ensure that these torturers, murderers, and enablers would never be held legally accountable.

Even so-called "ethics" were disregarded.  Although Yoo and Bybee were found by Justice Department ethics lawyers to have committed "professional misconduct," which could have potentially resulted in their disbarment, a morally deficient DOJ supervisor named David Margolis overruled this finding, allowing Yoo and Bybee to now make lucrative livings through the very same legal system they once demonstrated nothing but contempt for-Yoo by teaching law at a prestigious university, and Bybee by serving as a federal judge, thanks to a  nomination by George W. Bush.

It was perhaps the disgust the American people felt over this rewarding of torture, coupled with the Bush administration's lies about, and mishandling of, the invasion of Iraq, that helped usher in the presidency of Barack Obama.  But, if people were looking to Obama to pursue justice, they were sadly disappointed.

Obama quickly announced a "policy" of "looking forward, not backward," and even went so far as to strong-arm foreign governments to dissuade them from indicting CIA torturers.  His DOJ lackey, Eric Holder, refused to prosecute CIA agents who had tortured victims to death, and habitually intervened on the side of the torturer in civil cases to ensure that victims would never obtain even a modicum of justice.

Obama's administration also refused to prosecute Jose Rodriguez, the director of the National Clandestine Service, for destroying videotapes showing CIA torture, even though a court order and the 9/11 Commission demanded these tapes be preserved.  And, in direct violation of Article III, Section Three of the United States Constitution, and despite the fact the victim wasn't on any government "kill list," the Obama administration murdered sixteen-year-old Abdulrahman al-Awlaki in a drone attack, because his father, Anwar al-Awlaki, had been a spokesperson for al-Qaeda.

Also, despite their pretensions about "open" government, Obama and Holder displayed no hesitation in prosecuting and imprisoning CIA agents and government officials who exposed the United States government's criminality and use of torture.

Now there is Donald Trump, who, in 2017, ordered the raid that killed eight-year-old Nawar al-Awlaki, half-sister of Abdulrahman.  Trump has not only made it clear that his administration is more than willing to slaughter children, he also subscribes to this new American "tradition" of rewarding torture and those who promote it and/or cover it up.

This is evidenced by his nomination of the despicable Gina Haspel to head the CIA.  Haspel not only oversaw the torture program at a secret CIA prison in Thailand, she also participated with Rodriguez in the destruction of the torture tapes.  Yet, despite her amorality and willingness to obstruct justice, Senate Republicans, joined by a few toadying Democrats, approved her nomination.

Perhaps, in a way, it is fitting that a criminal like Haspel now heads the CIA.  After all, this is an agency that has made itself a fixture in American government by cannibalizing its own criminality, first by destabilizing governments, and then by using this destabilization as an excuse to remain in, and interfere with, the affairs of a country.

Professional liars like Sarah Huckabee Sanders, and war criminals like Condoleezza Rice, have tried to portray Haspel's nomination as a milestone for "women's empowerment."  But that is like claiming the self-loathing Supreme Court "justice" Clarence Thomas, who never met a civil rights law he didn't loathe, is a milestone for African-American empowerment.

The agency Haspel now heads has demonstrated no compunction about directly and/or indirectly raping, torturing, maiming, and killing men, women, and children.  It has overthrown democratically elected governments; supported brutal dictators, imperialists, and colonialists; conspired with members of organized crime to commit assassinations; facilitated drug dealing; and engaged in a plethora of other atrocities, not to promote democracy and freedom, as its mythology tries to get Americans to believe, but to preserve the worst of capitalist oppression and corporate fascism that keeps people in developing nations impoverished, and their government officials susceptible to bribery, so labor and resources can be exploited by the one percent that controls the bulk of America's wealth.

Regular readers of Pravda.Report may recall that many of my recent articles discussed the National Football League's (NFL) ostracism of Colin Kaepernick (and now Eric Reid) for his protests during the playing of the national anthem.  Some have questioned why this topic is particularly newsworthy.

The reason is because, in many ways, the NFL (particularly many of the team owners) is a microcosm of everything vile in America.  Trump, for example, in a repellent appeal to his racist supporters, has been especially vociferous in his condemnations of Kaepernick.  But the irony is that while Kapernick was protesting injustice and human rights violations, Trump was nominating Haspel, a perpetrator of injustices and human rights violations.

Clearly, since the dawn of the new millennium, the American government's priorities, views on human rights and freedoms, and basic principles of right and wrong have been painfully distorted, and evidence suggests it is only going to get worse.  The executive branch nominates torturers and obstructers of justice to positions of power; the legislative branch sycophantically rewards them; and the judicial branch, most notably the United States Supreme Court, routinely abdicates its role as a "check-and-balance," and has become increasingly corrupt, racist, unethical, and politicized.

In previous Pravda.Report articles, I have argued that the fundamental struggle in today's world is not instigated by the clash between good and evil, but between evils deemed acceptable because they benefit the power structure (and thus the masses fail to recognize them as evils), and evils that do not.  This is why people who torture and murder without government approval are called sociopaths and sadists, while people who torture and murder with government approval are called "patriots."

I have also argued that this struggle explains the purpose of mortality.  After all, what incentive is there for people to do good in the world if they are destined to suffer poverty, ridicule, and perhaps even imprisonment or assassination, while people who perpetuate evil are enriched, praised, and awarded positions of power.  Bush, Obama, and Trump have clearly demonstrated that a "justice" system created and controlled by humans is a farce; therefore, it would seem logical that those who profit from exploiting injustices during their lifetimes should be punished for them after their deaths.

After I expressed this sentiment, one particularly perceptive reader commented that such a view is nothing more than a "cop-out" used to rationalize the failure or unwillingness of those in power to pursue justice here on earth.

I would agree that what I am arguing is perhaps more wishful thinking than reality-that maybe those who profit from their evil are the wise ones, and those who suffer for trying to expose and/or combat evil are the fools.  But, I'll also admit, it is difficult to swallow the possibility that Yoo, Bybee, Rodriguez, Bush, Obama, Holder, Trump, Haspel, and others of their ilk might never occupy their well-deserved places in Hell.

So, is there an afterlife that "balances the scales"?  I don't know.  But what I do know is if America continues on its current path, it will lose its already moribund sense of humanity, and no longer have any moral authority to pontificate about justice, human rights, democracy, equality, and freedom to the rest of the world.

World leaders unite with Russia at St. Petersburg International Economic Forum

2018/05/25

On the second day of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, a plenary meeting was held, in which Russian President Vladimir Putin, French President Emmanuel Macron, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Chinese Vice President Wang Qishan and IMF head Christine Lagarde took part.

During his welcoming speech, President Putin said that such meetings, which have already become traditional events held in a very friendly and warm atmosphere, are especially important now, against the background of highly intense international relations.

"Such a discussion, informal dialogue is especially important today, when the system of international political, economic and trade relations is undergoing a serious test of durability. Conditions for doing business, the share of investments, and everyday life are changing dynamically," Putin said.

Until recently, he said, the core of the world economy was based on two most important principles. "First off, it is the freedom of entrepreneurship, trade and investment - an integral part of the rules in international relations. Secondly, it is sustainability and predictability of these rules, secured by legal mechanism. However, today we are witnessing not just erosion, but the demolition of these grounds. This system is breaking down. Today's rule is to violate rules. One thing is clear: violations have become an official tool for many countries, and many countries are forced to take mirror measures and adapt themselves," Putin said.

"Today, it is impossible to agree even on symbolic steps in the world economy. The era of global "free trade" is coming to an end. Today, it goes about a new version of protectionism. Protectionist measures and trade restrictions are taken under the guise of national security references. The twisted spiral of sanctions and restrictions continues spiralling further, affecting an increasing number of countries and companies, including those that were certain that the regime of trade restrictions will never affect them. Yet, arbitrariness and lack of control inevitably leads to the temptation of using instruments of restriction again and again, broader and broader, to the right and to the left, at any occasion, regardless of all talks about political loyalty, solidarity, previous agreements and long-term cooperative ties. On a global scale, such behaviour of centres of power is fraught with negative, if not catastrophic, consequences. This confluence of factors may lead to a global systemic crisis, which humanity has never encountered yet.

"Such a system of global mistrust may take the world market to a state of subsistence economy. Rules should be uniform and transparent and legitimate for all players of the world market. We do not need trade wars today, we need full-fledged trade peace. It is important to maintain respect for each other: Russia stands for freedom of trade and world integration, for free dialogue on the way to development. We encourage our partners from Europe, America, Asia and other regions of the world to move together towards sustainable development," Putin said.

French President Emmanuel Macron spoke next. Macron supported Vladimir Putin's initiatives and  called to be even more flexible and bolder in economic cooperation. He quoted a few excerpts from "War and Peace," and then stated that "in France courage returned to us in our minds. Let us be as flexible as in judo. We need to fight what Solzhenitsyn called the dawn of boldness ... one must be brave!" Macron said.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was more reserved, but more specific. He spoke in favour of Japan's participation in the project of creating a transport infrastructure for the delivery of Russian liquified natural gas to Asian markets via the Sea of Japan. He also made a subtle allusion to the issue of the Kuril Islands dispute.  Abe ended his speech by saying that Asia should become a peaceful, prosperous and developing region, noting that one needs to address the North Korean question accordingly.

Vice Chairman of the People's Republic of China, Wang Qishan, also devoted his speech to the "economy of trust." "One needs to respect each other to create the atmosphere of trust," Mr. Qishan said. He strongly condemned the "baton of sanctions", because such a policy poses a threat to the global market.

The head of the IMF, Christine Lagarde, also said that the rules and transparency of trade and economy were indeed in jeopardy.  She said that Russia was coping with difficulties and achieved an incredible breakthrough. However, she called for greater integration of Russia into the world economy and said that Russia needs to abandon the "raw material economic model". Christine Lagarde also spoke about the danger of globalisation and said that it was not a fair process at all times. That was an unprecedented statement for the head of the IMF to make.

Robbie Williams sings for wealthy Russians at St. Petersburg International Economic Forum

2018/05/25

British singer Robbie Williams performed in Russia on May 24 at a closed party for guests and participants of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2018).

For wealthy representatives of the Russian public, Williams performed his hit song "Party Like a Russian", written in 2016 as a travesty of rich and powerful Russians (сlick here for a few videos).

Robbie Williams asked the audience: "Is it Germany? Is it England? Is it Spain? No? It is Mother Russia?" before proceeding to the song.

Attendance to the party with the Robbie Williams concert in it was exclusive. Every guest was supposed to have a person invitation to be able to attend the evening and enjoy the concert of the British musician.

Many praised Robbie for singing live very well. Those who were at the concert later said that the singer was happy to be on stage in Russia.

Champagne was flowing like water at the party. Organisers purchased  600 bottles of expensive Moët champaign, and all the bottles were empty several hours into the party. Famous guests, among them former presidential candidate Ksenia Sobchak, entrepreneur Mikhail Prophorov and many others, were treated posh dishes like octopus with potatoes, veal calf with tuna sauce, risotto and julienne.

German expert explains why European Union and Russia develop ties speedily

2018/05/25

US policy makes the European Union and Russia discuss joint economic projects, rather than issues related to the crisis in Ukraine, manager for Eastern Europe and Central Asia at the German Foreign Policy Society, Stefan Meister, said in an interview with Swiss TV channel SRF.

According to him, the Trump administration calls fundamental values of transatlantic relations into question. At present, interests of Europe and Russia overlap at least on the Iranian issue.

Russia interfered in conflicts in the Middle East for the sake of and within the confrontation with the West as a result of the Ukrainian crisis. As for the crisis in Syria, Russia used to defend its position on the matter, but then Putin went on the attack, the German official said.

Russia has established itself as an influential player in the Middle East, which one has to negotiate with. The United States has left vacuum and anti-American sentiments in the region, Meister said.

Earlier, the Deutsche Wirtschafts Nachrichten newspaper wrote that EU countries did not support sanctions against Russia, but would extend them for another six months being under the thumb of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who obeys the United States.

It was noted that most EU states initially rejected the sanctions, but US Vice President Joe Biden openly stated that the US would force the EU to participate in it.

Blame MH17 on Russia: International investigation turns into demonic circus

2018/05/25

The International Joint Investigation Team (JIT) stated on May 24 that it was a Russian Buk missile that shot down Boeing 777 of Malaysia Airlines in July 2014 over Ukraine. The accusation was based on photos and videos that people had uploaded on social media shortly after the disaster. In other words, the statement from the JIT is nothing but another portion of groundless accusations to demonise Russia in the face of the world.

The conclusion made by JIT experts is not the first one of the kind. In 2016, there was an "interim report," when it was said that the commission would not provide all the materials of the caae because it could harm the investigation. In addition, it is not the first time, when foreign investigators accuse Russia of downing Flight MH17 aircraft without providing any facts at all.
Experts have serious doubts about the quality of the work of the investigating team and ask questions about the real goal of that work.

Here is a comment on the subject that we received from Honoured Pilot of the USSR, Oleg Smirnov.

"This version is not the first, but just the next one in the absolutely mediocre and unprofessional investigation into the causes of the grave tragedy. This is part of the information warfare against Russia, because it lasts for three years already and there is a great deal of gross violations of international aviation regulations in this investigation.

"On the second day after the tragedy, I compared the facts that had emerged by that time, and they made me believe that the country that shot the Boeing down was Ukraine. Contrary to strict requirements to close airspace for the flight of civil aircraft over the territory where military actions were taking place, Ukraine ignored that international regulation. Ukraine actually allowed the Malaysian Airlines Boeing to fly over war zone.

"The co-author of this disaster is the Dutch government, which did not find either strength or desire to save the lives of its citizens who were flying on that plane. The Dutch authorities did not demand Ukraine to comply with international aviation regulations. Therefore, the Dutch government pushed those people into that aircraft.

"Interestingly, Russia also conducted its investigation into the MH17 disaster, but the JIT ignored the conclusion of the Russian side. In particular, it goes about the fact that there was an unexploded Buk missile found on the site of the tragedy. The missile hardly had any damage on it. The plane was shot down, but then there was a whole missile found on the site. How can this be possible?

"The Russian company Almaz-Antey, the maker of Buk missile systems, conducted an experimental launch of the missile under similar conditions. Of course, the missile was torn into pieces. However, the international commission ignored those findings. It is also curious that JIT experts talk about the Buk missile and accuse Russia of the disaster, simply on the basis of something that they found on the Internet. Yet, Dutch prosecutors say that they do not know yet who shot the Boeing down. However, it still remains questionable whether it was a Buk missile that shot down Flight MH17.

"As JIT representatives said during their press conference, they had a whole range of photos and video materials, on which the Buk anti-aircraft system was seen. During the analysis of those images, the experts found a number of distinctive features. The combination of those features was so unique that they could be considered as "fingerprints", the investigators explained. Allegedly, the only Buk missile system, on which such a unique combination of distinctive features was found, was the self-propelled Buk SAM, which was repeatedly captured on photo and video materials as the system was traveling in a column of the 53rd brigade on June 23-25, 2014.

"In addition, there is no certainty that the fragments of the nozzle and the engine of the Buk anti-aircraft missile that were presented to the public during the press conference on May 24 were actually the fragments of the missile that shot down MH17. It is worthy of note that missiles of this type were withdrawn from the Russian armed forces in 2011, but JIT investigators did not comment on the matter.

"To crown it all, the international commission decided to make the statement now for political purposes, during the first day of the international economic forum in St. Petersburg, where, contrary to all the rhetoric about "Russia's isolation", delegates from 72 countries of the world are present.

"Therefore, all these announcements come as an attempt to "refresh the topic," and demonise Russia further. The very phrase "based on data from social networks"makes one only snort a laugh. The prosecutors in charge of the case clearly distance themselves from making such ridiculous accusations.

"In a nutshell, this endless investigation will last for many more years. The JIT will continue presenting "revealing reports" every time when it is politically advantageous. However, every new report from this group of investigators already starts producing the opposite effect discrediting their work entirely."
