GENEVA, July 20. /TASS/. The Chairman of the Audit and Compliance Committee of the International Federation of Football (FIFA) Domenico Scala at the extraordinary meeting of the FIFA Executive Committee to be held in Zurich on Monday, will propose to consider limiting the term of office of the organization’s president, BBC reported.
The meeting will be held at the FIFA headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland on Monday.
According to BBC, Scala will propose a series of FIFA reforms. Some of Scala's planned reforms are thought to include: publishing the salaries of FIFA’s president and Executive Committee members; introducing term limits for all FIFA executives and its president, likely to be a maximum of three terms of four years; making FIFA responsible for integrity checks on potential executive committee members away from regional confederations and introducing a centralised ‘fit and proper person’ test; FIFA’s annual congress of 209 member associations to directly elect Executive Committee members.
It is possible, however, that no agreement will be reached and that the Executive Committee will decide it wants to wait for a new president to be elected. Despite that, Blatter's desire to leave office on a relative high - after pushing through change - should ensure that some or all of the measures are approved, BBC reported.
FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter announced on June 2 his decision to resign from his post in connection with a corruption scandal in the federation. Four days earlier, Blatter was re-elected as FIFA president for a fifth term, beating the candidate from Jordan Prince Ali bin Hussein, who withdrew from the election before the second round of voting.
In late May, an unprecedented corruption scandal flared up in FIFA as seven of the organisation’s high-ranking officials were arrested in Switzerland for bribery, money laundering and corruption during the election of the host countries of several world championships - from 1994 to 2022. Blatter was offered to withdraw his candidacy from the elections or postpone them, but he refused to do it, but soon after the victory announced his resignation. Until the election of a new FIFA president, the 79-year-old Swiss national will stay on the post.
Member of the FIFA Executive Committee, Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko will speak at the meeting in Zurich. "We should make a decision as soon as possible on holding the congress and election a new president," Mutko said. "This president should start protecting the image of this organization," he added. "FIFA is a "strong, transparent and powerful" organisation, Mutko told a news conference on Thursday.
In accordance with the FIFA Statutes, the organisation’s new president election is to be held in December and February. Blatter previously said in an interview with Swiss media that the FIFA extraordinary congress is likely to take place in early 2016.
