Russia's top arenas hosting World Cup 2018

As Russia marks 1,000 days before FIFA's World Cup in 2018 on Friday, let's take a look at some of the championship's top venues that are already hosting football matches or are about to start very soon.

Fisht Olympic Stadium (Sochi)

The stadium was built primarily for the 2014 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, serving as the main venue for their opening and closing ceremonies. It has a 40,000-person-capacity and will be rebuilt for the World Cup to host 47,659 people.

Otkrytie Arena (Moscow)

The stadium opened in September 2014 and was designed to accommodate 45,360 spectators. It currently hosts the home matches of Spartak Moscow of the Russian Premier League and occasionally of the Russian national team.

Zenit Arena (Saint Petersburg)

The staduim is currently under construction and is scheduled to open in 2016. The stadium will have a capacity of 66,881 people and will host the games for Saint Petersburg's Zenit FC before it hosts the World Cup.

Kazan Arena (Kazan) 

The arena was completed in July 2013. Its capacity is 45,379 people. It is a home stadium for local football club, Rubin, in the Russian Premier League.


It has already hosted the 2013 Summer Universiade football competition and will also host the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup.
