Grozny Explosion Kills 5, Injures 12: Interior Ministry

MOSCOW, October 5 (RIA Novosti) - Five policemen were killed and 12 were injured as a result of an explosion that took place before a concert in Grozny, a spokesperson for Russia's Interior Ministry told RIA Novosti.


"We confirm that five people died and 12 were injured," the spokesperson said.


Earlier, the 9th city hospital said in a statement that ten injured in an explosion were currently staying inside the walls of the medical facility, and specified that they were in stable condition.


On Sunday evening, a concert was scheduled to celebrate City Day in Grozny. At the entrance to the concert hall, the policemen noticed a suspicious young man. When they decided to inspect him and establish his identity, the man exploded himself.


Russia's Investigative Committee has stated that the alleged perpetrator of the attack was the 19-year-old local Opti Mudarov. The committee also said that it "had initiated a criminal case on the fact of explosion in Grozny on the grounds of the crimes stipulated by Article 317 of the Russian Criminal Code (attempt on the life of law enforcement officers), and part 1 of Article 222 of the Criminal Code (illegal arms traffic)."
