Moscow Builds Largest Skate Park in Europe

2014/09/10

MOSCOW, September 10 (RIA Novosti) - The largest skate park in Europe opened at the All-Russian Exhibition Centre (VDNKh) earlier this week.

The one hectare (2.5 acre) park consists of four large bowls, complete with pools, ramps, rails, and stairsets. The park is designed to accommodate everyone from beginners to professionals, and is even equipped with an area that has been specially designed for people with disabilities.

The park is being installed as part of the complete reconstruction of Ostankino Park, located on the territory of the Exhibition Centre, which will include the construction of over a dozen playgrounds, a soccer field, a hockey rink, along with several ponds, hiking trails and bike paths.

The VDNKh exhibition center was originally established in the 1930s to show off Soviet economic achievements. It has undergone significant revitalization in the last several years after struggling through stagnation and a lack of funding through the 1990s and much of the 2000s. The center’s Soviet-era name – the Exhibition of Achievements of the People’s Economy, was re-introduced earlier this year following an interactive poll.
