An explosion of a freon cylinder at the building of the Russian Academy of Sciences has killed one person. Reportedly, the explosion occurred as a result of improper handling of refrigeration equipment.

The incident occurred at the building of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences, located Leninsky Prospekt, where the Supercomputer Center is located, an official spokeswoman for the Academy, Valentina Kamneva said. The equipment was not damaged, she added.

Strangely enough, employees of the academy did not even know about the explosion. They learned of the incident only upon the arrival of police. As it turned out, many employees did not even know what was located on the "Minus Eight" level, where the Supercomputer Center was located.

The victim, Alexander Mikhailov, had his head severed as a result of the explosion.

The building of the Russian Academy of Sciences was not evacuated as a result of the incident.
