A water cannon has been used by German police at a protest staged by the ‘Hooligans against Salafists’ group, also known as HoGeSa, in Cologne. The far-right demonstration was expected to gather hundreds of participants.
Police had earlier sought to ban Sunday’s demonstration, however, a Cologne court dismissed the motion and said the protesters would have the right to gather at a fixed location, but they would not be allowed to march through the city’s streets.
A live feed from the scene showed officers trying to sustain the protesters and finally deploying a water cannon.

A similar demonstration last year in Cologne ended in violent clashes between protesters and police. At least 14 people were injured.
