MOSCOW, July 27. /TASS/. The artistic director of Russia’s famous Bolshoi Theatre, Sergey Filin, has unveiled plans to help skating legend Evgeni Plushenko prepare his new program for a new season of 2015-2016.
Both men saw hard times in their lives some time ago. In January 2013, Filin was attacked, getting his face burned with acid. He was taken to hospital with face and eye burns and had to undergo several surgeries and long treatment, making his theater comeback only eight months later. The famous figure skater had a back surgery in the same year to replace spinal disc after a major injury.
Filin told TASS that he met with Plushenko and his wife Yana Rudkovskaya on Sunday to discuss the upcoming project. He sees his main task in finding ‘new images’ for the figure skater. "We will shortly begin join work with choreographers, with Yuri Possokhov among them. He has just choreographed the ballet Hero of Our Time, whose world premiere at the Bolshoi Theater was a success," Filin noted.
At the end of April, the Figure Skating Federation of Russia put Plushenko on the national team for the next season. "I keep training and will soon start preparing new programs," Plushenko told TASS in June.
"I will disclose a little secret, we will stage them together with the Bolshoi Theatre," he said giving no more details.
Plushenko, 32, who has not performed since the 2014 Sochi Olympics, said in April that he would return to sports and take part in the world and European championships in 2016.
The titled Russian figure skater performed in four Olympics throughout his career, winning his first Olympic gold at the 2006 Winter Games in Italy’s Turin and the second in February last year at Russia’s Winter Olympics in Sochi.
Plushenko, who also brought Russia silver medals both at the 2002 Olympics in US Salt Lake City and at the 2010 Olympics in Canada’s Vancouver and won seven European champion titles, struggled with back injuries over the two skating seasons prior to the 2014 Sochi Olympics, but kept insisting that he would be able to perform well on his home ice. He had to withdraw from the Sochi men’s individual figure skating competition because of a back injury.
