Russian rhythmic gymnast Mamun wins gold at European Games in Baku

BAKU, June 20. /TASS/. Russian rhythmic gymnast Margarita Mamun has taken a gold medal at the first European Games in Azerbaijan’s capital of Baku when she scored the highest 18,850 points in the Women’s Individual Hoop final on Sunday.

Belarussian athlete Melitina Staniouta was on the tails with 18,500 points taking the silver medal and Israeli Neta Rivkin claimed bronze with 18,150.

Russia holds its lead in the medals table with 36 gold, 17 silver and 14 bronze medals.

The first European Games are held in Baku on June 12 through 28, with athletes competing for the total of 253 sets of medals in 20 sports.

Competitions in 11 sports - archery, athletics, boxing, beach volleyball, wrestling, cycling, shooting, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo and triathlon - are also the qualifiers for athletes to reserve places in their national teams for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro.
