March against corruption in Moldovan government held in Chisinau

2015/04/05

CHISINAU, April 5. /TASS/. More than 1,000 people took part in an anti-governmental march in the Moldovan capital city of Chisinau protesting against corruption.

The protested adopted a declaration demanding punishment to those responsible for the impoverishment of the people, for inefficient reforms and discrediting the idea of European integration.

The march was organized by the public organization Dignity and Justice Civil Platform, which stands for Moldova’s integration in Europe and against corruption in Moldovan government.

The organizers said the march was timed to mark the anniversary of riots of April 7, 2009, when supporters of pro-European parties that had lost parliamentary elections to the Party of Communists crushed and set on fire the parliamentary building and the presidential residence. They hoisted flags of Romania and the European Union on the building of the presidential residence. However the following six years when the pro-European coalition was in power were marked by loud corruption and political scandals.

"Our platform is based on an extremely dramatic civil experience. Let us admit that the situation in Moldova has never been that difficult. The current government has failed to live up to our expectations concerning the European integration. We are united by the idea that the state must be back in the hand of its citizens and that we must preserve the European-wards vector of development," Angela Arame, a journalist and one of the movement’s leaders, said.

The Dignity and Justice Civil Platform was set up in February 2015 to exert pressure on the government. "Participants in this movement may have their own political preferences or support various political movements. Our goal is to pool civil society’s indignation against such a situation in the country when corruption is the root of all evil," political analyst Igor Botsan, a member of the initiative group, told journalists.
