Russians Travelling to US or Spain Safe From Ebola: Health Minister

2014/10/13

MOSCOW, October 13 (RIA Novosti) - Russian citizens traveling to the United States or Spain are not at risk of being infected with Ebola, Russian Health Minister Veronika Skvortsova told journalists on Monday.

“These are sporadic cases, and on every case a very detailed study of contacts is conducted, preferably up to 90 percent of contacts, all those who have touched the person or his clothes,” Skvortsova said during the World Health Organization conference on fighting against tobacco.

Skvortsova added that “doctors should be able to identify the infection, because if the virus spreads to the European countries, then our situation will become much more complicated, as the intensity of our cooperation with Europe is much higher than with African countries.”

The worst Ebola outbreak in history began in southern Guinea in February and has since then spread to Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Senegal.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 4,000 people have died from the virus in the current outbreak.

The Ebola virus is transmitted through direct contact with the bodily fluids of those infected.

Though there is no officially approved medication for the disease, several countries, including Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Japan are currently working on developing the vaccine to stop further spread of the deadly virus. According to Russian health officials, Russia is currently testing its anti-Ebola vaccine and has begun working on a new drug to treat and prevent Ebola.
