BADEN, October 21 (RIA Novosti) – Terrorism can only be addressed by a large international coalition, but NATO keeps on rejecting such forms of cooperation, Russia’s Ambassador to Austria said Tuesday.
"International terrorism, which has not spared our country as well, keeps expanding. International community is fighting this global evil with varying success, and the experience of an international coalition's presence in Afghanistan can hardly be recognized as satisfactory ... with regard to the fight against international terrorism," Sergei Nechayev said at the Terrorism and Electronic Media conference in Austria's Baden.
"This global evil could be overcome only within the framework of a broad international coalition, united in its ideas and actions," Nechayev said.
The ambassador added that NATO and the Collective Security Treaty Organization, comprising Russia and five other post-Soviet nations, could form a "natural alliance" to counter terrorism, but NATO keeps rejecting such forms of cooperation. Nechaev also noted that certain members of the US-led anti-terror coalition are guided by political ambitions and choose partners on an ideological basis.
Following the proclamation of a caliphate on the seized areas across Iraq and Syria by the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group in June, the United States launched air strikes against the insurgents operating in the two countries. Air strikes in Syria are being carried out without an approval from Damascus - a move opposed by Moscow.
US President Barack Obama outlined a strategy which involves the creation of a broad international coalition to fight the insurgency in the Middle East. On Monday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Russia is not interested in joining coalitions established outside the UN Security Council.
