Chinese NA NA 2 Ship in Distress Anchors Near Sakhalin, Waits for Help

MOSCOW, October 5 (RIA Novosti) - The Chinese NA NA 2 ship in distress has anchored near Sakhalin Island, awaiting large fishing refrigerator trawler Urumpet and rescue boat Irbis, the Russian Emergencies Ministry in the Sakhalin Region reported Sunday.


"Large fishing refrigerator trawler Urumpet and rescue boat Irbis are headed toward ship in distress NA NA 2. The first vessel is expected to arrive in 5-6 hours," the report said on the ministry's website. "The crew is said to have managed to anchor the vessel."


On Sunday, the ministry's Crisis Management Center received information about the SOS signal from NA NA 2, en route from South Korea to the port of Moscalvo in the Okhinsky District.


According to the report, NA NA 2's engine shut down and it drifted toward the shore. There are 15 crew on board, all of them Chinese nationals. The Mi-8 helicopter will be deployed if necessary.
