MOSCOW, September 24 (RIA Novosti) - Russian nationalist Nikita Tikhonov, who is already serving a life sentence for double homicide, has been sentenced to 18 more years in prison for seven additional killings, two attempted murders, weapons possession and membership in an extremist organization, Russia’s Investigative Committee reported on its website on Wednesday.
Nikita Tikhonov, who has been recognized by a court as the leader of the extremist organization BORN (a Russian acronym that stands for "Militant Organization of Russian Nationalists”) was sentenced to life in prison in 2011 for the murder of Novaya Gazeta journalist Anastasia Baburova and human rights lawyer Stanislav Markelov.
Tikhonov has now pleaded guilty to seven more murders, including the killing of federal judge Eduard Chuvashov, two attempted murders and weapons possession. He was sentenced to 18 more years in prison, although prosecutors had earlier demanded that he serve 20 years.
Tikhonov made a deal with prosecutors in early September to provide testimony in exchange for expedited court proceedings, says the Committee.
The investigation of another member of BORN, Ilya Goryachev, is still in progress.
On Thursday, the Moscow City Court extended the detention of Goryachev until November 8.
