Putin, Ban Ki-Moon Discuss Struggle Against Afghan Drug Threat: Kremlin

MOSCOW, September 23 (RIA Novosti) - Russian President Vladimir Putin and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon discussed in a phone conversation situation in Afghanistan and emphasized the need for a joint struggle against the drug threat, the Kremlin said on Tuesday.


"The latest developments in Afghanistan have also been addressed, including with a focus on a joint struggle against the drug threat," the Kremlin press service said in a statement.


According to the Federal Drug Control Service of the Russian Federation, about 150 billion individual doses of heroin and 30 billion individual doses of hashish are being produced in Afghanistan every year. In 2013, cultivation of illegal drugs in Afghanistan amounted to 209,000 hectares.
