Lawyer: Russian Pilot Yaroshenko Detained in US Might Meet Relatives Late Fall

2014/09/10

NEW YORK, September 11 (RIA Novosti) – Sentenced to 20 years in prison for alleged drug-trafficking Russian pilot Konstantin Yaroshenko will only be able to meet with his family late fall or early winter, his lawyer Aleksei Tarasov told RIA Novosti.

"As Yaroshenko"s daughter is at the 11th grade at school and can"t miss classes, most likely, they will not meet before fall or rather winter school break [late fall or early winter]," Tarasov said on Wednesday.

This academic year Russian schools will go on break on October 27 – November 5, and then on December 29 – January 12.

The lawyer reminded that Yaroshenko's wife has not managed to get American visa yet. However, even if it takes more time than expected, she will still have the opportunity to see the husband.

"In jail, there is a list of people eligible to meet with prisoners. Yaroshenko's wife is in this list," Tarasov noted and said he would find out whether Yaroshenko's mother and daughter are in the list.

He also mentioned that Viktoria will be able to see her husband during the visiting hours, adding that he will come to the place with the family.

Viktoria Yaroshenko told RIA Novosti earlier that the issue of the US visa dragged on, as her documents were lost in the US Embassy in Russia.

Russian pilot Konstantin Yaroshenko was detained by US in 2010, accused of conspiring with drug smugglers. Presently, Yaroshenko is serving a 20-year sentence at the Fort Dix Federal Correctional Institution. In February 2014, Yaroshenko started complaining of severe heart pains, dizziness and nausea, fearing they were symptoms of an impending heart attack. Russia's efforts to provide Yaroshenko with medical assistance were blocked by US officials.
