St. Petersburg’s Bid to Host UEFA Euro 2020 Unaffected by Politics – Vice Governor

2014/08/16

ST. PETERSBURG, August 16 (RIA Novosti) - The current political situation will not affect Saint Petersburg’s bid to host UEFA European Championship in 2020, R-Sport reported Friday, citing Vasiliy Kichedzhi, Vice Governor of the city.

“I’m sure the issue [of international political situation] will not affect St. Petersburg’s bid. I repeat – I cannot imagine what should happen for our bid not to be supported,” Kichedzhi was quoted as saying.

In December 2012, the UEFA Executive Committee chaired by UEFA President Michel Platini took the decision to hold a “UEFA Euro for Europe” in 2020, rather than a tournament in one or two countries. Thus the championship will be held in 13 cities.

19 cities have submitted their bids. The final decision on the host cities will be announced this September.
