ST. PETERSBURG, August 16 (RIA Novosti) - Over 70 percent of the residents of Russia’s Saint Petersburg support the city’s bid to host UEFA European Championship in 2020, R-Sport reported Friday, citing Vasiliy Kichedzhi, Vice Governor of the city.

“The country’s leadership, Russia’s Football Union, the city’s authorities, and over 70 percent of the resident support hosting this festive event. We should play and wait all together,” Kichedzhi was quoted as saying.

St. Petersburg is among the nineteen European cities that submitted their bids to host Euro 2020 matches. UEFA’s inspection commission arrived in St. Petersburg Saturday.

2020 will mark the 60th anniversary of the first European Football Championship and the matches will be held in thirteen cities across Europe.
