MOSCOW, August 13 (RIA Novosti) -The Russian agricultural watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor and Omsk Region border guards have intercepted a vehicle trying to smuggle a shipment of US poultry from Kazakhstan to Russia, Rosselkhoznadzor’s official website said Wednesday.

The illegal shipment contained 1,334 boxes with more than 20 tons of poultry.

“The whole shipment was not permitted to enter the territory of Russian Federation due to the inappropriate veterinary documents and a ban on US poultry imports, in accordance with the presidential decree,” the website reported.

According to Rosselkhoznadzor, the shipment was sent back to Kazakhstan and the perpetrator was subjected to administrative penalty.

On August 7, Russia imposed a ban on food imports from the European Union, the United States, Canada, Australia and Norway. The list of banned products includes pork, beef, poultry, dairy, fruits and vegetables.
