Argentina Seeks to Increase Meat Exports to Russia

2014/08/06

BUENOS AIRES, August 7 (RIA Novosti) - Argentinian meat producers are interested in increasing their exports to Russia, but diplomatic work is needed to lift export restrictions in the country, the head of Argentina’s chamber of meats industry and trade (CICCRA) Miguel Schiariti said.

“The Russian market is, and has always been interesting to Argentina. The only sad fact for Argentina’s industries is that there are export restrictions imposed by the country’s government,” Schiariti said.

He added that “despite new opportunities of selling more meat,” Argentina’s existing restrictions on exports hinder the producers’ ability to satisfy the demand.

“To meet the demand by supplies, a serious diplomatic work should be conducted by Russian and Argentinian governments,” Schiariti added.

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on Wednesday banning imports of agricultural and food products from countries that imposed sanctions on Russia for one year. The complete “black list” of products is expected to be announced Thursday.

Russia’s agricultural watchdog, Rosselkhoznadzor, said it will hold consultations on Thursday with several Latin American countries, including Ecuador, Brazil, Chile and Argentina, on expansion of their food supplies to Russia.

Brazil said Tuesday that it planned to expand supplies of meat, by-products and dairy products to Russia. Brazil said it was ready to provide guarantees on compliance with the demands and the norms of the Customs Union.

Russia’s ban on imports comes as a counter-measure to the most recent economic penalties imposed by the United States and the European Union.

Moscow has stated repeatedly that imposing sanctions against Russia will have a negative effect on the economies of countries that impose them and called the language of sanctions counterproductive.
