MOSCOW, April 29 (RIA Novosti) – US businesses may continue working with Russia’s state-controlled oil giant Rosneft despite the sanctions recently imposed against its CEO Igor Sechin, the New York Times reported Tuesday.
“US persons are not prohibited from dealing with Rosneft, including participating in meetings of the company board,” the paper said citing a Treasury Department official.
According to the official, Washington’s sanctions did not target Rosneft, and Sechin does not own a majority of the company, so US companies can continue to work with the Russian oil giant.
The United States on Monday imposed sanctions, including asset freezes and visa bans, against Sechin and six other Russian individuals and 17 Russian companies linked to Putin’s inner circle.
Moscow has repeatedly warned that talking in the language of sanctions is “inappropriate and counterproductive” and warned its Western partners about the “boomerang effect” that sanctions would have.
The US and EU earlier imposed targeted sanctions against Moscow over its reunification with Crimea, a former region of Ukraine that held a referendum in March in which 96 percent of the population voted for integration with Russia.
Leaders of the G7 group of nations have also threatened Russia with broad economic sanctions in the event of further escalation in the situation in Ukraine.
