The Secret Nuclear Test Ground: Then And Now

2014/02/03

The military airfield Bagerovo is located in a Crimean village not far from Kerch, Ukraine. It was a secret test ground of the air forces that participated in nuclear testing. In 1998 the military unit was disbanded and the airfield with the whole infrastructure was abandoned.

It took only half a year to build the airfield (1951-52), the purpose of its construction was testing of cruise missiles, performing air nuclear explosions and extraction of explosion products from the clouds. They also built a good wide runway for heavy missile carriers.

That runway was the second biggest in the USSR. Two jet planes could take off towards each other. They flew through the clouds formed by explosions and extracted air samples and particles of radioactive dust.

They used real nuclear bombs.

All letters from the airfield went through Moscow, none of the workers had to blurt out the secrets of the place.

Over 300 hectares of steppe at the former military test ground are the territory called “Object M”, it has many radioactive waste alert signs because it’s the burial ground where under the layer of soil and clay they buried radioactive wastes.

The militarymen who were working here used to be called deaf-and-dumb because they could not pronounce a single word about the object.

Following the military training of landing troops on planes An-12 and An-22 at the airfield in June 1971 some photos of the garrison and related articles appeared in press – that was the reason to disband the unit, the object ceased to be secret.
