Drinking Water Delivery Planned for Detained Russian Ship

MOSCOW, January 9 (RIA Novosti) – Drinking water will be provided to the crew of a Russian fishing trawler detained by the authorities in Senegal on Saturday, a government source told RIA Novosti on Thursday.

“A representative of the Russian Fisheries Agency has reached an agreement on providing drinking water to the Russian fishermen. A French warship at port in Dakar will provide the water,” a source at the agency said.

Yury Parshev, the director of the company that operates the trawler Oleg Naidenov, said on Thursday its water reserves should last two months.

Parshev added that diplomatic talks on the release of the ship planned for Wednesday had not taken place, nor had medical aid requested by Russia on Tuesday arrived.

The captain of the ship, Vadim Mantorov, and a galley attendant were injured during the detention of the trawler, a spokesman for the Russian Fisheries Agency said on Sunday.

The Oleg Naidenov was detained by Senegal on Saturday on suspicion of illegal fishing in Senegalese waters and remains under guard at Dakar. The ship was operating near the border with Guinea-Bissau and its owner insists it did not enter Senegalese waters.

The head of the Russian Fisheries Agency said in a TV interview on Sunday that Greenpeace had “prompted” the detention of the vessel. The organization put the vessel on a blacklist of illegal poachers after it was caught fishing without a license in Senegalese waters a year ago.

The Senegalese authorities are planning on seizing its cargo and fining the company that operates the trawler 600,000 euros.
