Magnitude-5.6 Earthquake Rattles Eastern Siberia

MOSCOW, December 22 (RIA Novosti) – An earthquake registered at magnitude 5.6 near its epicenter rattled the Russian region of Khakassia in eastern Siberia early Sunday morning.


A state of emergency has been declared in the region, though no fatalities have been reported so far, Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry said in a statement.


The town of Gorevo, where the highest magnitude was recorded just before 2 a.m., is believed to be 17 kilometers (10.5 miles) from the quake’s epicenter, the statement said.
