2013/09/04

MOSCOW, September 5 (RIA Novosti) - Two people died and another one was injured when two trucks and three cars collided in central Russia’s Tver Region, the regional Emergencies Ministry department reported Thursday.

The accident occurred on the 173th kilometer of the M10 federal highway. One truck and one car caught fire as a result of the collision.

“The driver and a passenger of one car died. The driver of a truck has been taken to the Tver city hospital,” the department said in a statement.

An investigation is underway.

About 30,000 people die in traffic accidents in Russia annually. The accidents are attributed to a poor condition of roads and traffic violations, including drunk driving, running red lights and crossing into the oncoming lane.

Russian authorities have recently adopted laws to considerably toughen punishment for the most serious traffic violations.
