MOSCOW, January 30 (RIA Novosti) – Five people have died in a car accident in the northeast of the republic of Tatarstan in Russia’s Volga Federal District, the Emergencies Ministry reported on Wednesday.
“Five people were killed and one person was injured in the accident that occurred at 22:50 Moscow Time on Tuesday on the Nizhnekamsk-Kazan highway near the village of Sukharevo,” the ministry said in a statement.
The ministry’s regional department said 35 people and 10 units of equipment were involved in the effort to unblock the damaged cars, a Lada 2110 sedan and a Nissan X-Trail crossover utility vehicle, extract bodies and clear the road.
Those killed rode in the Lada, and the injured person was the driver of the Nissan.
An investigation is underway.
Some 28,000 people died in car accidents in Russia in 2011, and about 26,000 in the first 11 months of 2012. Traffic violations and the poor condition of Russian roads are believed to be the key reasons for accidents.
