Suspected Militant Killed in North Caucasus

NALCHIK, December 12 (RIA Novosti) - A suspected militant was killed in a shootout with law-enforcers on Tuesday evening in Russia’s North Caucasus Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria, a spokesman for the local investigation department said.


"During a special operation in the city of Tyrnyauz, at about 21:20 Moscow time [17:20 GMT], law enforcers killed a militant who put up strong armed resistance,” the spokesman said.


An anti-terrorism officer was injured in the head in the shootout. He is currently under medical supervision.


The counter-terrorism operation regime was imposed in the city of Tyrnyauz and the surrounding area starting from 23:30 Moscow time [19:30 GMT] “with a purpose to prevent terrorist attacks, maintain public security, search and arrest members of armed groups,” law-enforcers said in a statement.


The counter-terrorism operation regime includes enhanced public security, identity check of all people in the area, the possibility of blocking cell phone communications and other measures.
