Reporter’s Murder Blamed on Islamic Militant

2012/12/10

MOSCOW, December 10 (RIA Novosti) – Last week’s murder of a television host in Russia’s Kabardino-Balkaria could have been carried out by an Islamist terror suspect on a federal wanted list, local police said on Monday.

The suspect, Zeitun Boziyev, 30, has been wanted since 2011 for the murder of two policemen, which he allegedly carried out with two accomplices, police said in a statement.

The same handgun was used in the 2011 shootout and in the murder of Kazbek Gekkiyev last Wednesday, the report said. The gun was also used in two other attacks on policemen last summer.

Police did not specify Boziyev’s possible motive for shooting Gekkiyev, who worked for the state-owned media holding VGTRK.

The Investigative Committee said earlier that Gekkiyev was killed over his “professional activities,” but gave no details. The media has speculated the murder could have been revenge for the irreverent behavior of one of Gekkiyev’s colleagues, who had smiled on air as he read a list of recently slain terror suspects.
