Moscow Braces for Coldest Night in 2012

2012/12/23

MOSCOW, December 23 (RIA Novosti) – Moscow is preparing for the coldest night this year as temperatures may plunge to minus 26 degrees Celsius (-14 Fahrenheit), the Fobos weather center said on Sunday.

This year the coldest night in Moscow was registered on February 3, when the night temperature fell to minus 24.6 degrees Celsius (-12.3 Fahrenheit).

“The ongoing processes indicate this threshold will be breached on the night of December 23-24 and the air in Moscow will cool to minus 24 – minus 26 degrees Celsius. In some areas of Russia’s Central District, the temperature may plunge to minus 36 degrees Celsius (-32.8 Fahrenheit),” Fobos said.

On the previous night, the temperature in Moscow stayed at about minus 20 degrees Celsius (-4 Fahrenheit).

Biting colds compel Russians to make excessive use of heating devices such as electrical space heaters and furnaces, which increase the chances of house fires.
