Russia hopes NATO will stop attempts of absorbing Georgia, Ukraine — envoy

MOSCOW, May 15. /TASS/. Moscow expects that NATO will stop attempts of absorbing Georgia and Ukraine into the alliance, Russia’s envoy to NATO Alexander Grushko said on Friday during a Moscow-Brussels video linkup.

Moscow sees NATO’s consistent rapprochement with Georgia in an effort to switch the country’s armed forces to NATO standards and to integrate it in the alliance, the diplomat said.

"But there are many realistic people in NATO and many understand the risks of the thoughtless ‘open door policy’," he said.

"Such development of events could result in serious consequences for the European security," the diplomat said. "In case with Ukraine and Georgia, division lines may be created inside the countries," he said.

"I believe that common sense will prevail and such thoughtless attempts will be abandoned," Grushko stressed.
