Cows And Milking Robots

2012/11/25

Last spring a new unusual dairy farm started to work in the Samara region. The cows of the farm are milked not by people, but by robots. We are going to see how it works.

They began from buying a Soviet farm for a song – some semi-destroyed structures sinking in the mud and overgrown with weeds. And here is what they have got today.

This is what they had to start from.

New constructions are practical and neat.

Russian cows are not suitable for giving good milk – their yield is not good and they are often ill. So they bought cows in Finland – healthy and big. Each cost 2500 euros. It took three days to bring them to Samara in trucks. So these beauties are Finnish.

It was hard to find hard-working, abstinent milkmaids so they decided to buy some milking robots. Eight amazing machines were brought from Germany.

A cow comes into such a machine when sees something tasty, a metal arm reaches its udder and finds its nipples with help of video cameras, puts milking apparatuses on them and the process begins. The cow is eating while being milked by the robot.

This one is young and curious, it does not eat but looks at the guy with the camera. The robot is working on the right.

It took time to teach cows to go to the robots by themselves.

Every cow has its unique European number, there is a box on its neck with all necessary information about the animal. When the cow comes to the robot, the sensor reads the data and reports it to the milking apparatus.

After milking the robot downloads information about the yield and health of the cow. Every cow gives from thirteen to thirty five liters of milk daily.

Now the farm has 2000 cows, 900 of them are milked. Each day the farm sends from twelve to thirteen tons of high quality milk to the plant.

Some workers at the farm are true enthusiasts.

The milking robots are equipped with means of mobile communications. The coordination center in Germany also gets necessary information. Specialists also know everything what happens with the cows. The farm has Internet connection as well.

Here the milk is cooled and sent for processing.

Cows as well as horses have their own hierarchy in a herd – something like hazing.

Can you guess what this is? Of course, it is salt – cows like to lick it so much!

Calves live nearby. They are provided with modern plastic rooms and hay. There are 500 of them at the farm.

They are very tender and curious, like to look right into your eyes.

This cat feels like an owner.

Such modern production still depends on hard-working devoted people.
