Russian Queen Ekaterina has founded Kherson as a fortress and shipbuilding dock in 1778. It was first ever Russian Black Sea Navy base. Soviet power over Kherson was established in 1920 after a short Russian Civil War. Biggest population of Kherson ever - 365,000 people - was in 1989, right before the USSR collapse. Then it became a part of a independent Ukraine. Let's see some photos of the place during the Soviet reign:
