Disappearing beauty of Russian Northern Churches

2017/04/09

Old wooden churches are a part of Russian cultural legacy. Most of them are left only in Russian North, in such regions like Karelia, Arkhangelsk, Vologda, Novgorod etc. They have a long history: most of ancient Russian buildings, till 18th century, were built exclusively from wood. All variety of buildings were wooden: churches, houses, barns, and even palaces. Very little of those survived till these days due to nature of the material - it disappears very quickly. However Russia had some effort in preserving some of those. Let's see those disappearing beauties:

Most of those churches were built without hammers and nails. Wooden parts were connected with each other with intellengent technology.

Many of those beautiful buildings however are left for neglect. Like these 17th century churches in Ilyinski Island village.
