"Baltic way" was a political phenomena in USSR. It happened in 1989 when two million people, residents of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia lined up holding hands. The length of their "living chain" was 600 km. They connected with living chain three capitals of Baltic countries - Riga, Tallinn and Vilnius. Let's see how it was:

Total two million people - this was 25% of total population of all the region. AN-2 airplanes were cruising above them throwing flowers, despite the flight ban issued by Moscow.
Six month later Lithuania declared to leave USSR. It was first of the ex-Soviet republic to declare independence.
