House on the Embankment
In Soviet times there lived members of the government and senior military officials, now this apartments are bought by rich people that want to have almost Kremlin registration and great view on the Christ the Savior Cathedral. But there is a mass of sinister tales and dark rumors hidden behind the facade.
Let’s start with the fact that the house actually stands on the coffin plates: they were dug at the church graveyard nearby (at the church of St. Nicholas on Bersenevka which fortunately survived) and laid the foundation. In this photo of a construction of late 1920s Bersenevskaya church could be seen at the top left and at the top right corner, you will notice the edge of the temple of Christ the Savior not blown up.
By the way, Bersenevka and other local places in the old days were called Swamp - low banks were constantly flooded, and until drainage channel appeared people didn’t walk through this "godforsaken swamp." But a lot of people gathered on the next Swamp – they looked at the public executions. There were quartered and beheaded Cossack rebels Stepan Razin and Emelian Pugachev.
