Production of Traditional Highlanders Felt Cloaks in Dagestan, Russia

2016/07/11

Two mountain of sheep wool loomed behind a craftswoman like the wings. With her strong, work-worn hands, she strung long strands to comb them and burst into thin fibers. Her helpers, like the legendary Amazons, stretched wooden bows. There is no doubt, the dark silhouette on the floor was a not yet made felt cloak.

In the village named Rahata there is the only factory of felt cloaks in Russia which was opened in 1925.

In August 1999, at the beginning of the second Chechen war, the factory was bombed. Even the unique museum of felt cloaks was destroyed. Three distant regions helped with repairs. But now they have to survive in market conditions themselves, without any help from outside.
