Merkel predicts Balkan war

2015/11/05

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has warned that talks about war in the Balkans are not quite groundless. According to the politician, it is connected with the migrant crisis. If the EU member-states seal their inner borders for migrants, the peninsula in the South-East of Europe may be deprived of peace. October faced 220,000 migrants, who crossed the EU borders during the only month, the UN data says.

Georgy Engelgardt, research fellow at the Institute of Slavic Studies:

'The Chancellor demands to take certain decisions on the migrants crisis and, thus, in order to attach importance to her words, she uses this threat - the threat up to war within the Balkan states. On my opinion, it still comprises a rhetorical moment. But if it all is neglected, if the influx is not stopped on the one hand, and Europeans do not find a somewhat functioning solution on the other hand, that can turn into drastic consequences.'
