SOCHI, October 8. /TASS, Yevgeny Ionov/. Switching Russia’s FIA F1 Grand Prix in Sochi from daytime to nighttime would be good but nothing has been decided as of yet, Formula One Chief Executive Bernie Ecclestone said on Thursday.
Asked by a TASS correspondent, whether the F1 supremo wished to see racing in Sochi in nighttime after 2020 Ecclestone said "who knows."
The CEO of the most prestigious auto racing event in the world also said that talks on the extension of the contract on the Russia GP after the year 2020 were still underway.
"Nothing has been decided as of yet," Ecclestone said adding that he was positive that this year’s race in Russia would be fantastic.
"What do you think about it [the race in Sochi]?" Ecclestone asked the journalists, who flocked him in the paddock, and when replied it would be fantastic, the F1 CEO said "sure."
The 84-year-old F1 boss also said he had no intentions at the moment to leave his managing post.
Asked to comment on this week’s media reports that he was allegedly in talks on selling his share in F1, Ecclestone said "I do not need to leave at the moment."
"I did not mention anything. I said that three people are interested in buying. We have been talking over it a bit and now they are more interested," he said.
"No I am not selling," Ecclestone said after asked whether he intended to sell his share in F1.
The world’s largest country hosted its inaugural F1 race only a year ago, although Ecclestone was in talks of hosting the most prestigious auto racing sport event sine 1980s.
The 2015 F1 season kicked off with the Australian Grand Prix on March 15, while Russia’s GP is scheduled for October 11 - the 17th out of 21 GPs on this year’s racing calendar.
According to the Russian race organizers, over 55,000 tickets were sold for the Sochi Grand Prix last year, while over 150,000 people were reported to attend the new racing venue throughout the early October weekend last year.
In its debut operational season, Sochi Autodrom, recently also named ‘Motorsport Facility of the Year’, hosted a number of important international, national and regional events.
Late last year, Sochi Autodrom was awarded the trophy of Formula One’s best racing track for 2014. The 2014 Race Promoters' Trophy was awarded at the annual FIA Gala ceremony in Doha, Qatar, presented to Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak by Formula One chief executive Ecclestone.
The Race Promoters' Trophy is a rotating award, engraved with the names of other top F1 tracks dating from 1975. The trophy will remain in Sochi throughout 2015 until the next track is announced at the end of the next season.
