Rouhani: Iran, Germany may boost cooperation for peace in region

2015/10/17

TEHRAN, October 18. /TASS/. Iran and Germany may boost cooperation for achieving peace and security in the Middle East, Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani said at a meeting with German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

"Iran and Germany should make endeavors to upgrade bilateral relations to solve regional and international problems, especially to launch effective campaign against terrorism and strive for regional peace and stability," Rouhani was quoted by the IRNA news agency.

"'The countries might have differences on international issues. However, settlement of such problems as terrorism is possible through commitment of all countries to basic and important principles and avoiding double-standards," he went on to say.

Along with this, Rouhani said the two countries should use the opportunity "to upgrade cooperation in all areas of interest" after the six world powers and Iran reached a deal on the country’s nuclear programme.

On Saturday, Steinmeier made a one-day visit to Tehran to take part in bilateral talks and also to attend the Munich Security Conference Core Group Meeting, which focused on the Syria crisis and Iran’s increasing role to ensure regional security after the nuclear deal sealed in Vienna on July 14 came into effect.

Later, Steinmeier is due to head to Saudi Arabia.

The so-called Core Group Meeting held in Tehran has been organised in the run-up to the next regular Munich Security Conference scheduled for February 2016.
