NEW YORK, October 15. /TASS/. Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization’s recruitment of US citizens is widespread and goes on "24 hours a day", FBI Director James Comey told a news conference at the FBI Office in Cincinnati on Wednesday.
Hundreds of people are "consuming" social media efforts to either draw them overseas to join the extremists "or if you can't come, kill where you are," Comey said. "So we have investigations in all 50 states to try to identify, among hundreds of people who are consuming this poison, where are they on the stages from consuming to acting, and how do we stop them from acting," he added.
US National Counterterrorism Center Director Nick Rasmussen said last week that more than 28,000 people from different countries have gone to join IS in Iraq and Syria, including 5,000 people from Western countries and around 250 people from the United States, he said.
Islamic State extremist organization
The Islamic State is an extremist organization banned in Russia. In 2013-2014, it called itself the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). In June 2014, IS announce the establishment of the "Islamic caliphate" on the territories seized in Iraq and Syria. According to US’ Central Intelligence Agency, the extremist group includes around 30,000 people, while Iraqi authorities claim there are around 200,000 in IS. Among members of the group are citizens of 80 countries, including France, Great Britain, Germany, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, US, Canada, as well as Russia and other CIS countries. According to reports, militants now control around 40% of the Iraqi territory and 50% of the Syrian territory.
