MOSCOW, September 28. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin said he and other Russians are united by first of all love for their Motherland.
In an interview with US TV anchorman Charles Rose for the CBS and PBS channels shortly before taking part in the UN General Assembly session, Putin said when asked why he is so popular: "There is something that unites me and other citizens of Russia. It is love for our Motherland."
Commenting on words that there can be no former KGB officers, Putin said: "You know every stage of your life has an impact on you. Whatever we do, all the knowledge, the experience, they stay with us, we carry them on, use them in one way or another. In this sense, yes, you are right."
When the American journalist told him that Putin is able to charm people well, the Russian leader said laughingly: "Well, if the CIA told you so, then it must be true. They are experts on that."
Putin not quite agreed with the assumption that his job is to "read other people" as an "intelligence officer."
"It used to be my job. Now I have a different job and for quite a while already," he said.
Putin also said: "My family and my relatives as a whole suffered heavy losses during the Second World War. That is true. In my father's family there were five brothers and four of them were killed, I believe. On my mother's side the situation is much the same. In general, Russia suffered heavily. No doubt, we cannot forget that and we must not forget, not to accuse anyone but to ensure that nothing of the kind ever happens again.".
