CHISINAU, September 20. /TASS/. Moldovan protesters on Sunday organized a motor rally across the country’s provinces instead of a mass rally in the capital city Chisinau.
Several hundred cars took part in the motor rally, the leaders of the DA (Dignity and Truth) Civil Platform, the rally’s organizers, told journalists.
"We set off in an organized motorcade to get our demand over to as many people as possible. I was told that about a thousand cars took part in the rally," Valentin Dolganyuk, a former deputy Prime Minister and a DA leader, said, adding he did not agree that the protests were subsiding.
"We have switched protests to towns and villages where protests are underway too. The authorities will soon feel they are to go, the people can stand them any longer," he said and promised to stage pickets at the parliament and other state institutions in Chisinau on Monday.
Political observers note however that protests were gradually subsiding with less and less people coming to rallies. "People arrive to take part in rallies from all over the country. They have to pay money for that," Vasilie Nastase, a DA spokesman, told journalists. Moldovan experts explain subsiding popular interest to protests by loss of confidence in the DA leaders who originally claimed it was a civil protest but later said they planned to set up a party to run for seats in the national parliament. However they failed to advance authoritative leaders.
Mass protests have been going on in Moldova since early September. Two big rallies involving thousands of protesters were held on September 6 and 13. The rally on September 6, the biggest one in the recent years, adopted a resolution demanding resignation of the country’s authorities. The protesters set up a tent camp of about 200 tents in Chisinau’s central square. Many of these tents are now empty. Talks with Moldova’s top officials were to no avail, since neither the president, nor the prime minister, nor the parliament speaker said they were going to step down.
This week, protesters staged pickets at the buildings of the prosecutor general’s office, the national anti-corruption centre and other state institutions demanding resignation of their top officials.
