MOSCOW, July 1. /TASS/. The Kremlin finds it hard to understand the gist of the initiative for probing into the legality of the USSR State Council’s decision to recognize the independence of the Baltic republics in 1991.
"The Kremlin is not familiar with that initiative, and, honestly speaking, I find it hard to realize its meaning," presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the media, when asked by TASS for a comment on the legislators’ query addressed to the Prosecutor-General’s Office.
On June 30, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov while answering media questions in Vienna, said he was ignorant of the legislators’ query regarding the legality of the Baltic countries’ decision to leave the USSR.
"I have not heard anything about such a request. I do know that we have diplomatic relations and inter-state treaties," Lavrov said.
The Prosecutor-General’s Office on Tuesday confirmed it had received the controversial request.
