VIENNA, July 1. /TASS/. Iran and six world powers (five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany) have failed to strike a deal on Tehran’s nuclear programme by June 30 and agreed to extend the historic deadline of the diplomatic marathon by a week.
"The P5+1 and Iran have decided to extend the measures under the Joint Plan of Action until July 7 to allow more time for negotiations to reach a long-term solution," said Marie Harf, a senior adviser for strategic communications at the US State Department.
The major text of the final 80-page deal is still a subject of negotiations in Austria’s capital Vienna. Now the scrupulous work will continue at the level of experts and political directors. It is still unclear when the ministers will join it.
A diplomatic source told TASS has not ruled out that the ministers could arrive in Vienna by July 5. "We are discussing the issue on the possibility of the meeting on Sunday," he said.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told journalists on Tuesday that "the situation at the talks on the Iranian nuclear programme is progressing in the right direction."
Mostly procedural issues rather than technical ones remain unresolved now, including the paperwork and the presentation of agreement to the UN Security Council, Russia’s top diplomat said.
"We have all the grounds to believe that the result is quite attainable and we instructed our deputies to spare no effort to reach the agreement within days," Lavrov stressed.
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said: "I am here to get a final deal and I think we can."
Starting from June 24, Iran and the P5+1 group of international mediators have been in talks to agree the text of the final comprehensive document which provides for a number of restrictions on Iran’s nuclear programme in exchange of revocation of all the existing anti-Iranian sanctions.
