Camilo Rueda Lopez/WikicommonsThe alleged spy was caught while handling classified documents, Russia's Security Service said.

Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) said it had detained a Lithuanian spy as he was receiving classified documents from a Russian in Moscow on Tuesday, Russian media reported Wednesday.

"The foreigner was brought to an FSB building, where after being presented with the evidence, he confessed to being an officer of the second department of the field service (military intelligence) of Lithuania's National Defense Ministry," Interfax cited FSB officials as saying.

The suspected spy is currently being held in Moscow's Lefortovo detention center. Lithuania's Foreign Affairs Ministry did not immediately comment on the situation.

A Moscow court on Wednesday sanctioned the man's detention for a period of up to two months, Interfax reported.

Spy scandals between Russia and the Baltic states — as well as other Western nations — are a regular occurrence. At the beginning of May, Lithuanian prosecutors said they had detained an FSB operative who had attempted to obtain information about the country's government, law enforcement system and intelligence services, according to a statement on the agency's website.
