US firm to invest $10 mln in truck assembly in Urals

CHELYABINSK, April 28. /TASS/. US-based Detroit Automotive Group & Technologies will produce trucks at the Yuzhnouralsky transport and logistics center in the Chelyabinsk Region in the Urals, Center Head Vladimir Pavlov said on Tuesday.

"A corresponding agreement has been signed. Detroit Automotive Group & Technologies will assemble trailer trucks on the center’s territory," he said.

The US company will assemble the International, Kenworth, Paccar and Freightliner truck brands with various engine types, including engines using natural gas, Pavlov said.

Detroit Automotive Group & Technologies plans to invest $10 million in the project at the initial stage with a possibility to expand investment to $30 million.

The US firm initially intends to assemble up to 5,000 trucks a year and eventually expand output to 25,000 vehicles annually. If the project goes ahead, up to 300 specialists will be employed at the first stage and their number may subsequently increase to 1,500 people.

A truck maintenance center and a dealer outlet are planned to be opened in the Chelyabinsk Region in accordance with the agreement.

The Yuzhnouralsky transport and logistics center is the largest investment project being implemented in the Uvelsky district of the Chelyabinsk Region.

The center’s first stage is scheduled to go into operation in mid-2015. The transport and logistics center has an area of 180 hectares, including 120 hectares covered by the center proper and 60 hectares taken up by an industrial zone.

Investments at the first stage are planned at 120 million euros. The Yuzhnouralsky transport and logistics center plans to get the status of a special economic zone.
